Zara McFarlane (born 1983) is a British jazz/soul singer and songwriter, based in East London, England. In October 2014, McFarlane was awarded the title of "Best Jazz Act" at the MOBO Awards. [1] She has had four albums released by Brownswood Recordings.

Early life

Zara McFarlane was born in London, England, in 1983 and grew up on the borders of east London and Essex. She was born to parents of Jamaican heritage, which has had a big influence on her musical tastes. [2] She studied musical theatre at the BRIT School, then went on to the London College of Music to study Popular Music Performance and completed a master's degree in jazz studies (vocals) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. [3]

McFarlane came up through Tomorrow's Warriors, [4] where she met many of the musicians she performs and collaborates with today. [5] [6]

Career

McFarlane's debut album, Until Tomorrow, was released by Brownswood Recordings in 2011. Her second album, If You Knew Her, was released in 2014, also by Brownswood. [7] She accompanied herself on guitar on "You'll Get Me in Trouble". [8] The New York Times reviewer of the album commented that "its identity derives from Ms. McFarlane's clear, elegant voice, and the musicians' training and influences". [9] Her next album, Arise , was released on the same label in 2017. [10] She has collaborated with Denys Baptiste, Orphy Robinson, Soweto Kinch and Jazz Jamaica. [11]

McFarlane's "If You Knew Her" tour in 2014 was praised in The Guardian by John Fordham, who described her as having "magnetic eloquence". [12] She has made television appearances on programmes around Europe, including Later... with Jools Holland (BBC Two), [13] Un Lugar Llamado Mundo [14] and the live broadcast of Victoires du Jazz. [15] She has also made radio appearances worldwide, with performances on Jamie Cullum's show on BBC Radio 2, [16] NTS Radio [17] and TSF Jazz being among her most notable. [18]

Shabaka Hutchings is a British jazz musician, composer and bandleader. He leads the band Shabaka and the Ancestors, and used to lead Sons of Kemet before its dissolution in 2022. Hutchings has played saxophone and other wind instruments with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Andre 3000, Floating Points, Mulatu Astatke, Polar Bear, Melt Yourself Down, Heliocentrics, London Brew and Zed-U.

Peter Edwards is a British pianist, composer and band leader, who is musical director of Tomorrow's Warriors' ensemble the Nu Civilisation Orchestra. He won the "Newcomer of the year" category of the 2015 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, and was nominated for the 2015 Jazz FM "Breakthrough Artist" award. Edwards composes and arranges music for large ensembles as well as writing for his own Peter Edwards Trio, and artists he has worked with include Mica Paris, Abram Wilson, Moses Boyd, Nicola Emmanuelle and Zara McFarlane.
