Zewail City of Science, Technology and Innovation is a nonprofit, independent institution of learning, research and innovation. The concept of the City was proposed in 1999 and its cornerstone laid on January 1, 2000. It's named after its founder the late Dr. Ahmed Zewail, the Nobel laureate in chemistry 1999. After numerous delays, the project was revived by the Egyptian cabinet's decree on May 11, 2011 following the January 25 Revolution. The Cabinet labeled it a National Project for Scientific Renaissance and named it Zewail City of Science and Technology. Zewail City of Science and Technology with its three constituents – the university, research institutes, and technology park. [2]
The cornerstone of Zewail City of Science and Technology was laid on January 1, 2000 in the Sheikh Zayed District of 6th of October City, Giza. Present at the ceremony were Ahmed Zewail, then Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, and a number of ministers including Ahmed Nazif, who later became involved in his capacity as Prime Minister. [3]
After many delays in the City’s establishment, the January 25 revolution in 2011 led to the revival of the initiative, and Ahmed Zewail was asked by the Egyptian government to form the Supreme Advisory Board and re-launch the initiative on its original site. [4] On May 11, 2011 the Cabinet of Ministers issued a decree to establish the National Project for Scientific Renaissance, and named it Zewail City of Science and Technology.
The City was officially inaugurated on November 1, 2011 in two buildings belonging to the Egyptian government on the Sheikh Zayed premises. The final legal status was established when the City was granted a law that outlines the City’s aims and constituents, as well as its financial and administrative structures.
In March 2015, Samih Sawiris donated 100 million Egyptian pounds to the City. [5]
Zewail city of science and technology currently has seven research institutes with further plans to increase this number to twelve. The main intention of the city is to cover all scientific fields required for development of the Egyptian society. The current institutes are: [6]
Former Egyptian president Adly Mansour issued a decree on April 9, 2014 granting 198 acres to Zewail City for the construction of the new campus in the October Gardens of 6 October City. In March 2015, president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi decreed that the new campus be built by the Engineering Authority of the Egyptian Armed Forces and inaugurated in a one-year time frame. [7] Zewail City’s University of Science and Technology and Research Institutes are now fully operational at the new campus as four building are completed (Helmy-Nano-Service-Academic). The headquarters is also fully functional in Cairo’s Garden City. Further plans include the possibility of opening another campus for the city in the New Suez Canal region during the coming years. Ahmed Hassan Zewail was an Egyptian-American chemist, known as the "father of femtochemistry". He was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on femtochemistry and became the first Egyptian and Arab to win a Nobel Prize in a scientific field, and the second African to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was the Linus Pauling Chair Professor of Chemistry, a professor of physics, and the director of the Physical Biology Center for Ultrafast Science and Technology at the California Institute of Technology.

Alexandria University is a public university in Alexandria, Egypt. It was established in 1938 as a satellite of Fouad University, becoming an independent entity in 1942. It was known as Farouk University until after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, when its name was changed to the University of Alexandria. Taha Hussein was the founding rector of Alexandria University. It is now the second largest university in Egypt and has many affiliations to various universities for ongoing research.

The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi was a private, higher-education and research institute active from 2007-2017. In 2017, it merged with two other institutions in Abu Dhabi, Petroleum Institute and Khalifa University, to become the multi-campus, sole-branded Khalifa University. Its previous structure, now part of Khalifa University, is now known as the "Masdar City campus".
Smart Village is a high-technology business district in the city of 6th of October in Giza Governorate, Egypt, established by Presidential Decree no.355 in 2000, with activities starting in 2001. It is a business district with office buildings, retail shops, entertainment, factories and green spaces. It is located on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, slightly west of Cairo, and occupies an area of 450 feddans. Its owned by Smart Villages Development and Management Company.
Essam Abdel-Aziz Sharaf is an Egyptian academic who was the Prime Minister of Egypt from 3 March 2011 to 7 December 2011. He served as Minister of Transportation from 2004 to 2005.

The German University in Cairo is a private non-profit university in New Cairo, Egypt. GUC was founded in 2002 by the presidential decree 27/2002 and according to the Egyptian law number 101/1992. It was established by decree of the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt No. 506 dated December 5, 1979 under the name" New Amria City", and it remained in that name until the decision of the Chairman of the council was issued. Ministers No. 1532 dated July 31, 1989 amending its name to become the New Borg El Arab city, with a total area of 47,403 acres (191 km2), about 55 km away from Alexandria, about 8 km from the Mediterranean coast and the Alexandria Matrouh coastal road, and about 3 km from Borg El Arab.
Ahmed Mahmoud Darwish is an Egyptian politician. He served as the first Chairman of the General Authority of Suez canal Economic Zone from 2015 to 2017. He previously served as Minister of State for Administration Development in the Nazif Cabinet between 2004 and 2011.

Amr Ahmed Samih Talaat is an Egyptian engineer, academic, and government official serving as the Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Egypt since June 14, 2018. Before his appointment as minister, he had a long career in the private sector, including a tenure at IBM Egypt where he served as Country General Manager. Talaat holds degrees in engineering and business administration and has also been active in academia as an adjunct professor at Cairo University. In his role as minister, he has been instrumental in advancing Egypt's digital infrastructure and implementing the country’s digital transformation strategy.
Ahmed Moharram, Sr. was Minister of Housing and Public Utilities in Egypt and the co-founder and chairman of ACE Moharram Bakhoum, an international engineering and project management group. Because of his significant contributions to the housing, infrastructure, and civil engineering, Moharram received honorary medals and awards such as the Medal of the Order of the Republic of the 1st Degree in 1964 from the former president Gamal Abdel Nasser, Medal of the Order of Merit of the 1st Degree in 1985 from the former president Hosni Mubarak, Mubarak's Award in 2002, and several other honors in Egypt. There is also a prize named after him at Cairo University for contributions in engineering.
The City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications (SRTA-City) is an Egyptian research institution, established by the 1993 Presidential Decree No. 85 and opened on 13 August 2000 to develop scientific technologies in the various industrial and research fields.
