Zoustar (foaled 8 September 2010) is a two-time Group 1 winning Australian Thoroughbred racehorse and successful sire who has sired multiple stakes winners.

Background

Originally bred by Racetree Stud outside of Beaudesert, Queensland, Zoustar was sold for A$85,000 at the 2011 National Weanling Sale. He was sold again at the 2012 Magic Millions yearling sale for A$140,000 to syndicator Sheriff Iskander. [2]

Racing career

Zoustar was successful in his first start on the 13 April 2013 winning at Canterbury by almost two-lengths. He won his next two starts culminating in his first stakes race when taking out the Sires' Produce Stakes at Doomben.

As a three-year-old Zoustar won his first Group 1, the Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill. Trainer Chris Waller said after the race, "He's a serious colt, a valuable colt now … geez he's got a big future." [3]

Three weeks later Zoustar effortlessly won the Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick by a margin of over four-lengths.

This victory ensured that Zoustar would start the even money favourite in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington a month later on the 2 November 2013. Zoustar won the race comfortably by a margin of two-lengths and allowed jockey Jim Cassidy to ride his 100th Group 1 winner of his career. [4]

After a four month break, Zoustar finished 8th in the Canterbury Stakes and was retired to perform stud duties.

Stud career

Zoustar was purchased for A$18 million by Widden Stud which Is located in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. [5]

Zoustar's service fee for his first four seasons was set at A$44,000. By 2021 this had risen to A$154,000 and in 2022 it stands at A$198,000. [6]

Zoustar shuttles each year to Tweenhills Stud in the Northern Hemisphere. [7]

Lonhro, nicknamed The Black Flash, was an Australian champion racehorse. He was from the first crop of the champion Octagonal out of the Group One-placed Shadea, who also produced the Group One winner Niello. Lonhro raced from two to five years of age and won 26 races, including 25 stakes races, ranging in distance from 1,100 to 2,000 metres. These included 11 Group One wins and 18 wins at weight-for-age. He was bred and owned by Woodlands Stud and trained by John Hawkes. Lonhro's name is based on the stock exchange code of the London Rhodesian Mining and Land Company, LONRHO. This arose from his foaling description as "tiny but perfect", a label ascribed to Roland "Tiny" Rowland, CEO of the company. The horse's name is deliberately misspelt. Lonhro died on 19 April 2024, at the age of 25.

Todman was one of the greatest Australian Thoroughbred racehorses and an important sire. He was perhaps best known as the winner of the inaugural STC Golden Slipper in 1957, being the first of Star Kingdom's five successive winners of the race. In 2023, he was described as "the best winner of the race". He was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2005.

Sebring was a top class two-year-old Australian Thoroughbred racehorse, that won five of his six race starts. After winning the AJC Breeders' Plate in his spring debut, he had wins in the Golden Slipper and AJC Sires Produce Stakes and second place, defeated by a nose, in the AJC Champagne Stakes.

Dundeel, or It’s A Dundeel as he was registered for racing in Australia, is a champion New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse. He is the fifth and most recent winner of the Australian Triple Crown.

Brief Truce was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After winning his only race as a juvenile in 1991 he improved in the spring of the following year to finish third in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and win both the Amethyst Stakes and the Gallinule Stakes. In June he recorded his biggest win when he defeated a very strong field in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Later that year he was placed in the Prix du Moulin, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Breeders' Cup Mile. After his retirement from racing he had some success as a breeding stallion in Australia.

Merchant Navy is an Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed considerable promise as a juvenile when he was undefeated in three start including the Listed ANZAC Day Stakes. As a three-year-old he proved himself one of the best horses of his generation in Australia over sprint distances, taking the HDF McNeil Stakes and the Coolmore Stud Stakes as well as being placed in both the Rubiton Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap. Pierro is a retired Australian racehorse who is now standing at stud. A bay horse, he stands at 16.1hh. He was from the fifth crop of the champion racehorse and stallion Lonhro out of the dam Miss Rite Note (IRE)(by Daylami). Pierro had a short racing career, racing in just two seasons and retiring to stud as a three-year-old. He ran in a total of 14 races, with 11 wins and 3 placings, including 5 Group 1 wins. His distances ranged from 1200m to 2040m. He was bred at Musk Creek Farm and sold for $230,000 in the Magic Millions sale.
