Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (born 3 March 1973) [1] is an Icelandic-American actor, producer, and screenwriter. [2] He is known for Fangavaktin , Children , Trapped and The Deep . On the international stage, he is known for his appearances in Lady Dynamite , The Secret Life of Walter Mitty , and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga .

Early life

Ólafur was born to Icelandic parents in Connecticut, United States, where his father studied medicine. His family returned to Iceland when he was around four years old. [3] [4] [5]

Career

Ólafur graduated from the Icelandic Drama School in 1998. Afterward, he became involved in numerous productions with the National Theatre of Iceland and Reykjavík City Theatre, also working with various independent theatre groups. He is one of the founders of Vesturport Theatre in Reykjavík. [6]

Ólafur is best known internationally for his role as Andri, the chief of police in the small town of Seyðisfjörður in the east of Iceland, in the series Trapped . Baltasar Kormákur, who devised the series, has said that the actor was chosen because he was not a typical leading man. In the UK, the Guardian TV critic called his performance "as remarkable as the landscape". Ólafur himself has said that he based the character on his own father. [4]

In June 2016, Ólafur lip synced in the music video for Winter Sound by the Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men. [7]

In 2019, the actor was cast in AMC's series adaptation of Joe Hill's NOS4A2 as Bing Partridge. [8]

He is also an Icelandic dubber and has provided the voices of various characters in animated films, such as Ice Age , Lilo & Stitch , Brother Bear , and Kung Fu Panda , among others. [9]

Personal life

Ólafur is in a relationship with Icelandic dancer Lovísa Ósk Gunnarsdóttir. They have two daughters, born in 2010 and 2014. [10]

Due to being born in the United States, he holds an American citizenship as well as an Icelandic one. [3]

Undercurrent is a 2010 Icelandic drama film based on a play by the same name and produced by the theatre group Vesturport. The film won the Best Picture award at the 2011 Edda Awards in Iceland. It tells the story of the crew of a fishing boat, one of whom commits suicide.

Vesturport is an Icelandic theatre group, founded on 18 August 2001. The group has performed plays in the United States, Europe and Australia. In 2011, it received the Europe Prize Theatrical Realities for its complete work, innovative character and originality.

Trapped is an Icelandic television mystery drama series, created by Baltasar Kormákur and produced by RVK Studios. It was broadcast in Iceland on 27 December 2015 on RÚV. Co-written by Sigurjón Kjartansson and Clive Bradley, the first series of ten episodes follows Andri Ólafsson, the chief of police in a remote town in Iceland, solving the murder of a former townsman whose mutilated corpse is recovered by fishermen. The series was directed by Kormákur, Baldvin Z, Óskar Thor Axelsson and Börkur Sigthorsson.

Presidential elections were held in Iceland on 25 June 2016. President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, elected in 1996, stepped down after serving five consecutive terms. The history professor Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was elected after receiving a plurality of 39.1% of the vote. He took office on 1 August, as the first new president of Iceland in twenty years.

NOS4A2 is an American supernatural horror drama television series, based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Joe Hill, that ran on AMC from June 2, 2019 to August 23, 2020. The series was created by Jami O'Brien and stars Ashleigh Cummings, Zachary Quinto, Jahkara Smith, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Virginia Kull, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The series deals with a working-class artist who uses supernatural abilities to track an immortal being who preys on children. In August 2020, the series was canceled after two seasons after completing the storyline presented in the original novel.

The 2019–20 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 69th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on 3 October 2019. On 13 March 2020, with each team having one game left, the season was postponed for at least four weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic in the country. On 18 March, the rest of the season was canceled. Fjölnir was relegated and Stjarnan was named divisional champions for having the best record at the time of the cancelation but no national champions would be named for the season.

The KR-b men's basketball team, commonly known as KR-b or KR Bumban, is the reserve team of KR men's basketball, based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It currently plays in the 2. deild karla and the Icelandic basketball cup. Despite the teams reserve status, it regularly features high profile players during the Icelandic basketball cup.

The 2020–21 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 70th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on 1 October 2020 and ended on 25 June 2021. Þór Þorlákshöfn won its first title by defeating Keflavík 3–1 in the Finals.

Vegferð (Journey) is an Icelandic television comedy mini-series developed by Glassriver. It is written by Víkingur Kristjánsson and directed by Baldvin Zophoníasson and premiered on Stöð 2 on 4 April 2021. It is a six-part series that follows fictional versions of friends and actors Ólafur Darri and Víkingur on a road trip through Vestfirðir to reshape their longtime friendship.

Reykjavik Fusion is an upcoming crime thriller television series set in Iceland directed by Samúel & Gunnar and starring Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Hera Hilmar.
