The 2023 European Cross Country Championships was the 29th edition of the cross country running competition for European athletes. It was held on 10 December 2023 in Laeken Park in Brussels, Belgium. [1]
Belgium staged the European Cross Country Championships for the third time after previous editions in Charleroi in 1996 and Brussels in 2008. [2] [3] [4]

The European Cross Country Championships is an annual international cross country running competition. Organised by the European Athletic Association, it is the area championships for the region and is held in December each year. The championships was inaugurated in 1994 in Alnwick and the venue for the championships changes each year.
The Senior women's race at the 2004 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held at the Ossegem Park in Brussels, Belgium, on March 20, 2004. Reports of the event were given in The New York Times, and for the IAAF.
The Canadian Cross Country Championships is the annual national championships for cross country running in Canada. Typically held in late-November and organized by Athletics Canada, it consists of races in U18, U20, Senior, and Masters categories. It also serves as part of the selection process for Canadian teams at the NACAC and World Cross Country Championships.
The 2014 European Cross Country Championships was the 21st edition of the cross country running competition for European athletes which was held in Samokov, Bulgaria, on 14 December 2014. The events were hosted at Borovets – a winter sports and ski resort in the Rila mountains.
The 2018 African Cross Country Championships was the fifth edition of the international cross country running competition for African athletes organised by the Confederation of African Athletics. It was held on 17 March in Chlef, Algeria – the first time a North African nation had hosted the event since its re-launch in 2011. There were five races on the program: 10 km for senior men, 10 km for senior women, 8 km for junior men, 6 km for junior women, and an 8 km mixed relay.
Nadia Battocletti is an Italian female middle- and long-distance runner. She won the gold medal for the 5000 metres at the 2021 European Under-23 Championships. Battocletti earned four individual gold medals in the U20 and U23 age groups at the European Cross Country Championships. She is the Italian record holder for the indoor 3000 metres and 5 km road race.
Mathilde Sénéchal is a French long-distance runner. In 2019, she competed in the senior women's race at the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Aarhus, Denmark. She finished in 60th place.
The Belgian Cross Country Championships is an annual cross country running organised by the Royal Belgian Athletics League that serves as the national championship for the sport in Belgium. It is usually held in February or March.
The 2021 European Athletics U23 Championships were the 13th edition of the biennial athletics competition between European athletes under the age of twenty-three. It was planned to be held in Bergen, Norway from 8 to 11 July., but this venue was cancelled for Covid pandemic reasons. Initially it was intended that the event would be postponed and held in another venue after the 2020 Olympic Games. Eventually the original dates were retained, and Tallinn, Estonia was chosen as the venue. This meant that Tallinn hosted two age-group championships in successive weeks: after the European Athletics U23 Championships, the Kadriorg Stadium also hosted between 15 and 18 July the European Athletics U20 Championships. For the first time in 13 editions, Italian team topped the medal table.
The 2021 European Athletics U20 Championships were the 26th edition of the biennial European U20 athletics championships. They were held in Tallinn, Estonia from 15 July to 18 July. The 2021 European Athletics U23 Championships had been held in the same venue one week earlier, after Bergen renounced.
Adriana Vilagoš is a Serbian athlete who specializes in the javelin throw. At the age of 18, she won silver medal at the 2022 European Athletics Championships, becoming the youngest ever European medallist in a throwing event. One year prior, Vilagoš was for the first time the World Under-20 Champion and earned silver medal at the European U20 Championships successfully defending her World U20 title in 2022 and breaking championship and European U20 records in the process.

The 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships are organized by European Athletics Association and held from 7–10 August 2023 in Jerusalem, Israel. Initially the competition was awarded to Cluj-Napoca, Romania but due to Cluj Arena not being fit for such championships, European Athletics decided to award the competition to Israel.
