Aster Medcity is a quaternary care healthcare centre in the city of Kochi and one of the largest in South India. [1] It is the flagship hospital of Aster DM Healthcare, a healthcare conglomerate founded by Azad Moopen. [2] This was the third venture of the group in Kerala, after Aster MIMS and DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (DMWIMS). [3]

Aster Medcity is a 5.5 billion waterfront facility [4] located along Kutti Sahib Road in Cheranallur, a suburb of Kochi and its 40-acre campus is situated on the banks of the backwaters of Kochi. [3] The hospital complex, designed by HKS Architects, has a built up space measuring a total of 62,710 square metres. [5] The hospital is 7 km from the city center and is accessible through the National Highway 66 (India). Edappally railway station is 7.3 km away and the nearest airport is Kochi International Airport, 24.7 km from the hospital by road. The distance to the National Highway 544 is 7.9 km at Edappally bye-pass junction where Lulu Mall, the largest shopping mall in the country, is located.

The hospital has an in-patient capacity of 670 beds and has 24 hour emergency and accident trauma care facilities. [3] The hospital has been functioning since September 2014 after a soft launch but the official dedication ceremony was on 6 May 2015, when the institution was inaugurated by the former president of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. [3]

The hospital has a general clinical division which includes internal medicine, general surgery, cilinical imaging, anesthesia and critical care, emergency, pulmonology, otorhynolaryngology, dermatology, craniomaxillofacial surgery, dental sciences, infectious diseases and infection control, psychiatry and nuclear medicine. It also has eight centres of excellence such as cardiac sciences, orthopedics, neurosciences, nephrology and urology, oncology, gastroenterology and hepatology, women's health and child and adolescent health, each staffed by independent medical teams composed of specialists, nursing and ancillary staff and technicians. [4]

Aster Medcity has facility for Minimal Access Robotic Surgery (MARS) using da Vinci Surgical System and is reported to be the first hospital in Kerala to provide the service. [4] The system employs telesurgical master-slave robotic system and the surgery is carried out using robotic arms instead of human hands.[ citation needed ] The Diagnostics division is equipped with 3 Tesla Digital MRI Scanner, 256 slice CT Scanner, Digital Mammography system, The Dexa, Digital X-Ray, Time of Flight PET CT, Cath Lab Allura Clarity system, Flat panel Bi-plane Hybrid Cath Lab, Colour Doppler Systems electronic 4D Imaging and Ultrasound Machines with multi modal image fusion. The clinical laboratory which conducts biochemistry, haematology, bacteriology, mycology, BS Level 3 tuberculosis, serology, immunology, histopathology, neuropathology, renal pathology, pulmonary pathology, haematopathology, bone pathology and onco pathology tests, is integrated with the hospital information system. The hospital has an ambulance service, a pharmacy and a rehabilitation centre. A blood bank is also operational round the clock in the hospital

Other services

Aster Medcity is linked to Aster Foundation, an independent charitable non governmental organization, engaged in providing free medical assistance to financially compromised patients. [6] The hospital serves as a referral healthcare centre for patients from the Persian Gulf region. The group has opened help desks in Qatar [7] and Oman [8] for this purpose.

Loyola Medicine, also known as Loyola University Health System, is a quaternary-care system with a 61-acre (25 ha) main medical center campus in the western suburbs of Chicago, in the U.S. state of Illinois. The medical center campus is located in Maywood, 13 miles (21 km) west of the Chicago Loop and 8 miles (13 km) east of Oak Brook. R.V. Jayakumar, MD, DM(P.G.I.), FRCP(U.K), M.N.A.M.S. is the former Head of the Department of Medicine, Trivandrum Medical College (1997-2000) and Kottayam Medical College.

The Mar Augustine Kandathil Memorial Lisie Hospital is a hospital near Kaloor, in Kochi, India. It was founded in memory of Mar Augustine Kandathil, shortly after his demise, according to his original vision and plans, in 1957, as a token of his devotion to St. Thérèse de Lisieux. It is managed by the Archdiocese of Ernakulam. Lisie Hospital is a tertiary referral hospital and one of the largest in Cochin. The Lisie Heart Institute is a major interventional Cardiology and Cardiothoracic centre. It performed nearly 4000 interventional cardiac procedures and cardiac surgeries in 2006. Their team of doctors was reconstituted in 2008 with the joining of Jose Chacko Periappuram as the Head of Cardiac Surgery and Jacob Abraham as the head of Cardiac Anaesthesia. The present team was instrumental in performing the first total arterial bypass surgery on a beating heart and heart transplantation under Dr. Jose Chacko in the state of Kerala.

Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (SJICR) is a tertiary care autonomous healthcare institute run by the Government of Karnataka, in Bangalore, with additional centers in Mysore and Gulbarga. At the Bangalore campus, it presently has 1150 in-patient beds for cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric cardiology, spread over two twin eight story buildings and is considered one of the largest dedicated heart hospitals in Asia. This new building which was opened in 2001 and was built at a cost of US$17 million.

His other achievements include the first beating heart, awake bypass and total arterial revascularization surgeries in the state. Periappuram is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of London. He is the founder and chairman of "Heart Care Foundation", a charitable trust that financially assists poor heart patients. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2011.

The college has an intake capacity of 110 students for the MBBS course each year. It was taken over by the Government of Kerala as a pure government institution on 11 December 2013.
