Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala is an Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical company situated in Thaikkattussery, near Ollur (Thrissur, Kerala). [1] It is managed by Thaikkattusseri Eledathu Thaikkattu Family, one among the Ashtavaidya families of Kerala. [2] Vaidyaratnam runs a NABH accredited nursing home by name Vaidyaratnam Nursing Home and an Ayurvedic Medical College apart from two ISO certified manufacturing plants in Thrissur and an R&D centre in Thaikkattussery, under the flagship of Vaidyaratnam. History

Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala (Oushada means medicine and Sala is a building or institute) was instituted in 1941 by Eledath Thaikkattu Neelakandan Mooss.

His son, Eledath Thaikkattu Narayanan Mooss, a recipient of Padmabhushan, succeeded him at the establishment.

Founder

Eledath Thaikkattu Neelakandan Mooss or E.T.Neelakandan Mooss (1904-1997) was an Ayurvedic practitioner and the founder of Vaidyaratnam Group.

After Gurukula schooling in childhood and later at Vailoppilli Sreedhara Menon Memorial Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, he learned Ashtanga Hridayam from Kuttancheri Valiya Aaryan Moose and Manu Moose. [5] He then joined his father Ashtavaidyan E. T. Narayanan Mooss Sr., at the family clinic. In 1954, Neelakandan Mooss founded the Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala and saw the establishment growing to include a Vaidyaratnam Nursing Home, Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College and Ayurvedic Research Centre. Government of India honoured him with national award Padma Shri in 1992 for his contributions to Ayurveda treatment. [8] [3] [2]

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College is Ayurveda college situated in Thaikkattussery near Ollur. The college is affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences and offers B.A.M.S. degree (Ayurveda acharya). The course is recognized by the Central Council of Indian Medicines (CCIM) and is of a duration of 5½ years and 12 months compulsory rotatory internship. [9] Students are admitted for the BAMS course from the list of medical entrance examination conducted by the Government of Kerala. The present intake for the degree programme is 40 students.

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College was founded by the Ashtavaidyan Eledath Thaikkattu Neelakandan Mooss on 2 October 1976 and is under the management of Vaidyaratnam Ayurvedic Educational Society, registered under the Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act XII/1955. The college has two hospitals with bed strength of about 150. Attached to the hospital, X-ray Unit and Ultra Sound scan unit are functioning.

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Museum is a museum showcasing the richness, the variety and the evolution of the Ayurveda traditional medicine of India. The museum is located in Thaikkattussery. The museum was inaugurated by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, on 28 December 2013. [10] [11] The exhibits include a diorama presentation of the history of Ayurveda from mythological period to modern times, a library of texts on Ayurveda, descriptions of various branches of Ayurveda, an exclusive section on Susrutha, a picture gallery, a 3-D gallery, and a digital library. Ollur is a major suburban area and an old commercial town in the city of Thrissur of Kerala state, South India. It is about five kilometres (3.1 mi) away from Swaraj Round on old National Highway 47 (India) towards Kochi. From ancient time onwards, Ollur was a major business centre in Thrissur district. Oushadhi or Pharmaceutical Corporation Kerala Ltd is an Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing company situated in Kuttanellur, in Thrissur City of Kerala state. It is a 100% Government of Kerala owned company and produces around 450 ayurvedic formulations.

Vaidyaratnam P. S. Warrier was an Ayurveda practitioner from Kerala, India. He is well-regarded as the founder of Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala, a major Ayurvedic treatment centre in Kerala.

Eledath Thaikkattu Narayanan Mooss was an Ayurvedic physician and the Chief Physician and Managing Partner of Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2010 for his contribution to the field of medicine specific to Ayurveda.

He was the chief Physician and Managing trustee of Arya Vaidya Sala. He was the youngest nephew of Vaidyaratnam P. S. Warrier, the founder of Arya Vaidya Sala.

Thrissur Ayurveda cluster is an Ayurveda cluster situated in KINFRA Park in Koratty in Thrissur District. The cluster is meant for a comprehensive development of Kerala brand of Ayurvedic products and train the manufacturers of Ayurveda products on the importance of safety, quality and efficacy. Vailoppilly Sreehara Menon Memorial Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, commonly known as GVHSS, Ollur, is a vocational higher secondary school situated in Ollur, Thrissur City and run by the state government of Kerala, in India. It is named after the poet Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon, who served as headmaster from 1936 to 1966.

J. Hareendran Nair is an Indian Ayurveda practitioner and entrepreneur from Kerala. He is the founder of Pankajakasthuri Herbals, a business group which has contributed in promoting and popularising Ayurveda and ayurvedic products across the country. The Government of India, in 2012, honoured him with Padma Shri for his services to the cause of Ayurveda.

Rajagopalan Krishnan Vaidyan was an Indian ayurvedic practitioner from the Indian state of Kerala and the president of the Association of Ayurvedic Physicians of Kerala.

K. N. Udupa

Kodethur Narasimha Udupa (1920–1992) was an Indian surgeon, medical administrator, a pioneer of integrative medicine and the founder director of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Born in Udupi in the South Indian state of Karnataka, His father was Tamayya Udupa scholar in Sanskrit and Jyotish belonging to Shivalli brahmin community. He passed his bachelor's degree in Ayurvedic Medicine (AMS) from Banares Hindu University, secured his master's degree (MS) from the University of Michigan in 1948 and passed FRCS examination from Canada.

P. R. Krishna Kumar was an Indian Ayurveda expert and managing director of The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Ltd. He founded the AVP Research Foundation, a non-profit organisation promoting research in the Ayurveda. He was the chancellor of the Avinashilingam University, and the chairman of CARe Keralam, a resource centre involved in efforts to standardise Ayurvedic medicines. The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Ayurveda.

Vaidyaratnam Triprangode Moossad

Vaidyaratnam Triprangode Parameswaran Moossad (1847–1919) was an Ayurveda practitioner from Kerala, India. He is well-regarded as the First Ayurvedic practitioner in Kerala to be awarded with the title of "Vaidyaratna", given to the native medical practitioners in India, by the erstwhile British Raj in India. Vaidya, in Indian language means a medical practitioner, and ratna means jewel. Only three such awards were ever given by the British Raj in the state of Kerala, which was part of Madras Presidency then. The second award was given to E.T.Narayanan Mooss of Thaikkattussery, in the year of 1923 and third was given to Vaidyaratnam P. S. Warrier of Kottakkal in the year 1934. The second and third Vaidyaratna awardees had business acumen as well and they had established their Ayurvedic hospitals which are being run by their successors even today. In contrast, the first awardee, Triprangode Parameswaran Moossad had not established any commercial institutions. He had taken a lead role in establishing the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam, an organization founded by several scholars of those times, with the objective of making the benefits of Ayurveda system of treatment available to all the sections of the society, irrespective of the caste, creed and religion. It is notable that T.P. Moossad had lived during troubled times, wherein India was still under colonial rule of the British Raj, and the country was highly caste-driven, orthodox and very poor. Moossad, along with his several associates had established the Samajam, breaking several social barriers in their efforts to give relief to many from various diseases.
