Berlengas Natural Reserve is a natural reserve in Portugal. It is one of the 30 areas which are officially under protection in the country. The main island is "Berlenga Grande". Other isles: Estelas & Farilhoes. The archipelago is off the coast of the city and municipality of Peniche, in the Oeste Subregion of Portugal.

Berlengas island group

The Berlengas are a Portuguese archipelago consisting of small atlantic islands 10 to 17 kilometres off the coast of Peniche, Portugal, in the Oeste region. These islands were traditionally known to British mariners as "the Burlings". The only inhabited island is its largest island, Berlenga Grande, although there is currently no permanent habitation in the archipelago. The other islands are grouped into two groups of islets, the Estelas Islets and the Farilhões-Forcados Islets.

Battle of the Berlengas (1591)

The Battle of Berlengas Islands was a naval battle which took place off the Portuguese coast on 15 July 1591, during the war between Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain. It was fought between an English privateer squadron under George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland, who had set out his fortunes by large-scale privateering, and a squadron of 5 Spanish galleys commanded by Francisco Coloma tasked with patrolling the Portuguese coast against privateers. While anchored off the Berlengas, the English ships were surprised by the Spanish galleys, which succeeded in taking one English ship and rescuing two prizes.

Cabo Carvoeiro

Cabo Carvoeiro is cape which lies on the Atlantic coast, along the westernmost point of the Peniche Peninsula, in the civil parish of Peniche, District of Leiria. Opposite to the Berlengas archipelago, the cape is integrated into a natural terrestrial and maritime reserve, in the vicinity of Furninha, a site known for the discovery of prehistoric remains suggesting human occupation since the Neolithic.

Battle of the Berlengas (1666)

The Battle of Berlengas was fought in 1666 during the Portuguese Restoration War, between the Portuguese defenders of the Fort São João Baptista and a Spanish fleet commanded by Diego de Ibarra. The fleet, which had destroyed Portuguese fisheries, bombarded towns and cut off supplies in one month as part of its onslaught, proceeded to storm the fort on the Berlengas. The fort was destroyed and the entire garrison were captured.

Berlenga Lighthouse Lighthouse in Portugal

Berlenga lighthouse, also known as the Duke of Bragança Lighthouse, is a functioning lighthouse situated on the highest point of the granite island of Berlenga Grande, which is a nature reserve in the Atlantic Ocean, 10 kilometres west of the town of Peniche in the Leiria District of Portugal. Although planned for construction in the 18th Century, work did not start until 1837 and it was completed in 1842.

In the same year, its Community Well-Being index was calculated at 47 of 100, compared to 58.4 for the average First Nations community and 77.5 for the average non-Indigenous community.
