The Chenango County Historical Society is an organization in Norwich, NY, devoted to preserving the history of Chenango County. The Norwich campus consists of the Ward No. 2 Schoolhouse, where the museum is housed, the James S. Flanagan Research Center, Loomis Barn and the Miller Pavilion. The Historical Society hosts various events covering local historical events and topics. The organization publishes an annual academic journal documenting historical events.

History

CCHS was first established in 1939. In 1956, the organization received an absolute charter from New York State. [1]

The Ward No. 2 schoolhouse was rewarded to CCHS by the county supervisors in 1958. [2] The building was renovated immediately afterward. In 1962, the museum was reopened, housing various antiquities from the Central New York region. The Historical Society acquired the Ross Schoolhouse in Preston, the Loomis Barn and the Chenango Canal building. [1]

The Journal of the Chenango County Historical Society debuted in 2012, with a new edition published annually during the summer. [3]

CCHS celebrated its 80th anniversary at the Chenango County Courthouse. [4]

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the organization to adopt online only exhibits and events. It briefly offered invite only visits in November of that year, before closing again. [5]

CCHS commissioned a series of short online videos documenting the experiences of former students who attended the schoolhouse before its closure. [6] On November 21, 2021, the organization celebrated the 125th anniversary of the building’s construction. [7] On December 22, the organization received $49,500 from the New York State Council on the Arts. [8]

Collections

The museum hosts seasonal exhibits in the Community Gallery. Notable exhibits include the works of local artist Alice Hudson. [9]

The Commerce Gallery houses manufactured pharmaceuticals from the Norwich Pharmacal Company [10] and historical objects from NBT Bank’s Norwich headquarters. [11]

Notable objects preserved by the Historical Society include an original Mickey Mouse undergarment made in Norwich during World War II, a Norwich Piano from the 20th century and various products from the Norwich Pharmacal Company, including Pepto-Bismol and Unguentine. [12]

Kopernik Observatory & Science Center Observatory

The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (KOSC), is a public observatory in Vestal, New York opened to the public on 16 June 1974 by the Kopernik Society of Broome County to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus in 1973. Its mission is to offer hands-on investigations and outreach programs for educating all ages about astronomy and science using advanced optical telescopes, computers and other tools. It is the first science laboratory facility in New York State designed for K-12 teachers, students and their families, and has been one of the best-sited and best equipped public observatories in the Northeast United States for nearly the last 40 years.

New York State Route 220 (NY 220) is a 20.81-mile-long (33.49 km) state highway located in Chenango County, New York, in the United States. It is signed as an east–west highway, but its actual routing wanders considerably from north to south as it proceeds across the county. The western terminus of NY 220 is at an intersection with NY 41 near the western county line in the town of Smithville. Its eastern terminus is in the town of Oxford, where it becomes County Route 32 (CR 32) east of the village of Oxford. The stub of NY 220 east of Oxford serves as a signed connection between NY 12 and the New York State Veterans' Home at Oxford located east of the village along the Chenango River.

New York State Route 320 (NY 320) is an east–west state highway located within Chenango County in the central part of New York in the United States. It extends for 3.55 miles (5.71 km) from an intersection with NY 12 north of the city of Norwich to a junction with Tiffany Road in the town of North Norwich. The road shifts from state to county maintenance at the latter junction, and NY 320's right-of-way continues northeast from Tiffany Road as County Route 29 (CR 29). NY 320 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York.

New York State Route 990L (NY 990L) is a reference route in Chenango County, New York, in the United States. The western terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 12 in the city of Norwich. Its eastern terminus is at a junction with NY 23 in the town of Norwich. NY 990L is one of four reference routes in New York that has been signed as a touring route. The highway is known as East Main Street in the city of Norwich and as East River Road in the town of Norwich. Both roads were designated state arterial highways in 1954, requiring the state to pay for all maintenance on the roads.

New York State Route 319 (NY 319) was a state highway in Chenango County, New York, in the United States. It was 5.47 miles (8.80 km) long and connected the hamlet of Preston to the nearby city of Norwich. The route began in the hamlet at an intersection with three county-maintained highways and proceeded eastward through the town of Preston to downtown Norwich, where it terminated at an intersection with NY 12.

The Northeast Classic Car Museum is a non-profit educational facility in Norwich, New York that collects and exhibits notable vehicles throughout the history of the United States. The museum opened on Memorial Day, 1997.
