The Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff in Finland [1] (Akava) is a trade union confederation in Finland representings employees with university-level, professional or other high-level training. It has 36 affiliated unions with a combined membership of 611,000. [2]

Akava is a central organization i.e. the individual members are not personally members of Akava but of a trade union which is a member of Akava. Akava has 36 member unions, the largest of which are the Trade Union of Education in Finland (OAJ), the Finnish Association of Graduate Engineers (TEK), the Union of Professional Engineers in Finland (UIL), the Finnish Association of Business School Graduates, Union of Sales and Marketing Professionals and Tradenomiliitto  [ fi ]. The Finnish Police Union (SJPL) is also affiliated.

On November 14, 2022 Maria Löfgren was elected as President of Akava. [3] Akava is affiliated with the European Trade Union Confederation and Eurocadres .

Akava is one of the three central organizations representing Finnish employees, the other two being the Finnish Confederation of Salaried Employees (STTK) and the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK).

In 2018, the TCO affiliated unions made up 37% of all active trade union members in Sweden, making the confederation the second largest of Sweden's three major confederations. The largest TCO affiliate is Unionen with 551,000 active members in 2018. TCO is independent and not affiliated to any political party in Sweden. TCO is an affiliate of the European Trade Union Confederation and Eurocadres.

The Swedish Confederation of Professional Associations is a confederation of 21 independent professional associations in Sweden. It gathers some 960,000 members, all of whom are academics or graduate professionals with a university or college degree. The members include economists, lawyers, architects, graduate engineers, doctors, scientists, teachers and many others. A growing share of Swedish union members are affiliated to a Saco union: 1% in 1950 and 18% in 2018.

LO, The Danish Confederation of Trade Unions was founded in 1898 and was an umbrella organisation for 18 Danish trade unions. At the end of 2018, it merged into the new Danish Trade Union Confederation.

The Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions, usually referred to by the acronym SAK is the largest trade union confederation in Finland. Its member organisations have a total of more than one million members, which makes up about one fifth of the country's population.

Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland TEK is a Finnish trade union of university-educated engineers, architects and scientists. In addition, the TEK is a learned society and the professional body of the engineering profession. The union requires that its full members have a master's degree or equivalent in engineering, architecture, mathematics, physics or in other sciences related to technology.

Disunited and poorly organized for most of its history, trade unions in Ecuador developed only slowly and had only a marginal political impact. Precise figures on unionization in the late 1980s were practically nonexistent, even within the unions themselves. The organized labor movement in Ecuador was divided into four confederations and a number of independent federations. At the local level, labor organizations also took the form of artisan guilds, cooperatives, and neighborhood associations. The Finnish Business School Graduates, founded in 1935, is a central organization for graduates and students in economics and business administration. It consists of 25 regional associations and 13 student societies. The association has over 50,000 members, including graduate members and over 15,000 students. Its graduate members from Finnish universities have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree. Applications from foreign university graduates are assessed individually. A member must have at least an academic bachelor's-level degree in business studies. Many of its members are working outside Finland. The Finnish Business School Graduates attempts to improve the success of its members as individuals. To do so, it implements several services concerning educational, professional, social issues and labour market conditions, always according to the needs of the members. On behalf of its members, it negotiates and concludes collective agreements concerning salaries and conditions of employment. The association is the fourth-biggest affiliate of AKAVA.

A police union is a trade union for police officers. Police unions formed later than most other occupations, reflecting both a conservative tendency and relatively superior working conditions. The first police unions formed in the United States. Shortly after World War I, the rising cost of living, wage reductions, concerns over amount of rest and growing dissatisfaction among rank and file police officers led to a number of police strikes from 1918–1923 and the formation of police unions globally.
