The Ebell Society was a woman's club with its first chapter in Oakland, California. It was founded in 1876 and was originally called the International Academy for the Advancement of Women. The club's purpose was the advancement of women in cultural, industrial and intellectual pursuits. [1]

Contents

After feminist Adrian John Ebell's early death in 1877 at age 37 the International Academy for the Advancement of Women renamed their club to honor him. Other chapters formed in California. [1]

From 1907 to 1959 the Oakland chapter had a club house built in the Tudor Revival style located at 1440 Harrison Street. [2] That building was destroyed by fire in 1959. [3]

The original Oakland chapter disbanded in 2011. [3]

Oakland Senior High School is a public high school in Oakland, California. Established in 1869, it is the oldest high school in Oakland and the sixth oldest high school in the state.

Ebell Club of Santa Paula

The Ebell Club of Santa Paula is a 1917 mansion, built as a women's club with the aim of the advancement of culture, and now serving as the home of the Santa Paula Theater Center. The Santa Paula chapter, formed in 1913, was the ninth California women's club; the first was established in Oakland by Dr. Adrian Ebell in 1876, and the movement was involved in a range of progressive campaigning on social issues.

Edith Jordan Gardner

Edith Monica Jordan Gardner was an American educator, specialized in history and an activist, including woman's suffrage and in the Sierra Club. She was president of the Southern California Social Science Association, Town and Gown Club, Cornell Women's Club of Northern California, Stanford Woman's Club, and the University of California branch of the Equal Suffrage League, among others. She was the head of the History Department at the John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, chairman of the Department of Legislation Oakland Forum, and one of the earliest members of the Sierra Club.
