History

Prior to 2002, the United States had limited engagement with the region. Timor-Leste, previously known as East Timor, was recognized by the United States on May 20, 2002, coinciding with its formal independence from Indonesian sovereignty. The U.S. Embassy in Dili was officially established on the day of Timor-Leste's independence, with Chargé d'Affaires Shari Villarosa leading the initial diplomatic efforts. Grover Rees III was appointed as the first U.S. Ambassador to Timor-Leste, presenting his credentials on December 10, 2002. [1] [2]

Under the auspices of the U.S. Embassy, Task Force Oceania members collaborate with various agencies in Timor-Leste to strengthen partner relationships and capacity building, including conducting various military exercises and training. [3] [4]
