Essien Udim is one of the Annang speaking Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State, [2] Nigeria. [3]

It was created out of the former Ikot Ekpene division and included the following clans in Annang land: Afaha Clan, Adiasim Clan, Odoro Ikot Clan, Ekpeyong Atai Clan, Ikpe Annang Clan, Okon Clan, Ukana Clan, Ukana East Clan. [4] Essien Udim LGA has an expected populace of 79,444 occupants with most of the area's general population being individuals from the Affang ethnic sub-division. The Affang language is broadly spoken nearby while Christianity is the most polished religion in the LGA. Milestones in Essien Udim LGA remember the Sunshine Battery Industry for Ukana Ikot Ide and the Akan Ikot Okoro conversion. Federal Polytechnic, Ukana and Topfaith University is located in Essien Udim. It is the home town of the former governor, minister and the present president of the Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria Chief Dr. God'swill Obot Akpabio.

History

Historically, it was the most populated area among the Annang Land with its headquarters in Afaha Ikot Ebak Currently, created in the year 1989 from the Ikot Ekpene LGA. its chairman is Mr. Anthony Udoh Luke. In Ikpe Annang there are fourteen villages which are:Ibam, Ikot Akpan, Ikot Ntuen, Nnung Iyang, Udok, Mbia Obong, Mbiabet, Ikot Ekpe, Ikot Eside, Ebe, Ikot Abiat, Ekpeno Oton, Onion Ono, Ekoi. and the smallest village among them is Ikpe Ekoi and the largest among is Mbiabet. In Okon there are eighteen villages which includes: Ikot Idem Udo, Ikot Oko, Ikot Essien, Ikot Uke Etor, Ikot Nya, Ikot Ama, Ikot Igwe, Ikot Ekefre, Ikot Ekpenyong, Ikot Ocho, Ikot Udo Okure, Ikpe Okon, Ifa Okon, Umon, Nji, Ufuku, Nto Okpo and Nto Ubiam. Which afaha ikot ebak is the headquarters. Ikpe Udok being one of the smallest villages in essien udim. The ikpe Udok village is governed by Chief Etim Udoekong which is his fourth year in seat.[ citation needed ]

The A342 highway crosses the east and the north of the LGA.

Geography

Essien Udim LGA observes two significant seasons; the dry and the blustery seasons while the normal temperature of the area is 25 °C. The absolute yearly precipitation in Essien Udim LGA 3550 mm while the normal humidity of the area is 86 percent. Essien Udim LGA consists of a few streams and feeders. [5]

Economy

Essien Udim LGA is wealthy in raw petroleum and flammable gas and as such the region has a few nearby and unfamiliar oil organizations. Fishing is likewise an exceptionally well known endeavor in Essien Udim LGA with the area's streams and feeders being wealthy in fish. Other significant financial commitment in Essien Udim LGA incorporate cultivating, exchange, making of blocks and pottery, making of raffia bins, caps and mats, and the creation of fishing nets and kayaks. Crops filled in Essien Udim LGA incorporate oil palm, cassava, and elastic while the business sectors in the space incorporate the Obo Annang market.

Abak is a town and Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The LGA was previously part of Cross River State. It was later sub divided into other local government areas such as Oruk Anam, Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun and Ika. Notable tribes include the Annang. Abak consists of five clans: Abak Urban, Afaha obong, Ediene, Midim and Otoro. The major economic activities of the people of this area before and after the Nigerian Civil War was palm produce exported through river port at Ekpene Okpo, Ntak Ibesit, a distance of about 8 km from Abak town. Abak town, the local government headquarters is located about 18 kilometres from Uyo, the State capital. It has a landmass of 304 square kilometers. Onna is a Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Its name comes from an acronym of the names of the four predominant clans in the area: Oniong, Nnung Ndem, Awa Afaha and Awa.

Ikot Ekpene, also known as The Raffia City, is a historic town in south-southern state of Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. It is the political and cultural capital of the Annang ethnic group in Nigeria. The town is located on the A342 highway that parallels the coast, between Calabar to the southeast and Aba to the west, with the state capital, Uyo, on this road just to the east. Umuahia is the next major town to the north. The population of the Ikot Ekpene Local government area was estimated to be 180,500 in 2022.

Eket is one of the 31 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The name Eket or Ekid also refers to the indigenous ethnic group of the region and to their language. The Eket people use the endonym Ekid for themselves and their language, but Europeans spell and pronounce the name as "Eket".

Ikot Abasi is located in the south west corner of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. John James Akpan Udo-Edehe was elected Senator for the Akwa Ibom North East District of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He took office on 29 May 1999.

Ika is a Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The headquarters of the Ika local government area is Urua Inyang. Chief Andrew Akpan Inyang-Etoh was a renowned community leader of the Annang ethnic group who was fondly called "Akpan Umoren Akpan, "Akpan Igwe" and "Noah". He was born in the present day Ukana Ikot Etan village which was extracted from the "Ekpuk Itiaita" that constituted the Ukana Ikot Ofok Village in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Chief Andrew Akpan Inyang-Etoh was the first man within the Ukana Ikot Ofok community to get his first two sons, Bernard and Columba, to enroll in the prestigious Holy Family College, Oku Abak. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Peter Inyang-Etoh is one of five sons, a distinguished Catholic Priest of Ikot Ekpene Diocese, an educationist, a friend of the needy and a disciplinarian, currently serving as the Governing Council Member of Akwa Ibom State University. He is the founder of Late Chief Andrew Akpan Inyang-Etoh Education Foundation.

The Annang Festival of Arts and Culture is celebrated in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom, a region located in South Southern Nigeria. The festival was initiated in 2016, in order to preserve the Anaañ history, language and culture. The festival aims at preventing the Annang tradition and its cultural heritage from undergoing extinction. It showcase and promote the rich natural endowments of Annang land in Akwa Ibom State. The festival also has a registered foundation referred to as the Annang Festival of Arts and Culture Foundation.

The 2019 Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly election was held on March 9, 2019, to elect members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in Nigeria. All the 26 seats were up for election in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
