Presbyterianism is a Reformed (Calvinist) Protestant tradition named for its form of church government by representative assemblies of elders. Though there are other Reformed churches that are structurally similar, the word Presbyterian is applied to churches that trace their roots to the Church of Scotland or to English Dissenter groups that formed during the English Civil War.

The Evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed Church in Peru was established by missionaries from the Free Church of Scotland. In 1915, San Andres College was founded by John A, Mackay. Medical work was centered in Moyobamba and Cajamarca. The first church work was started in 1921. The first church was built in Cajamarca in 1936 with 600 people present. The work spread to Tarapoto and Chachapoyas. But there was shortage of pastors and elders. The first General Assembly was held in 1963 with 5 presbyteries namely the Amazonas, Cajamarca, Lima, Celendin and San Martin, and the church become independent. The name of the denomination was Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Peru. The church had 3,000 members.
The Presbyterian Church of Africa was founded in 1898 by Rev. James Mzimba, who broke from the Church of Scotland. He was born in Ngquakai, and his father was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. Mzimba become a pastor, and was ordained in 1875. He was sent to Scotland to the anniversary of the Free Church of Scotland, but later severed its ties with the denomination. In 1899 he founded his own independent Presbyterian church. He died in 1911. The first Synod was constituted in Alice, Cape Colony. Mzimba had a dispute with the Free Church of Scotland over land and over the use of money. The Presbyterian Church of Africa is a predominantly black church. It was a small group of churches with 2 presbyteries. The church grew steadily. It is one of the oldest independent churches in Africa.
The Association of Reformed Evangelical Churches of Burkina Faso or Eglises evangéliques réformées du Burkina Faso, abbreviated AEERB, was started in 1977 by Pastor Kinza Lazare with 30 members. It separated from the Pentecostal Assemblies of God, a Pentecostal denomination. Lazare had studied in Benin, Theological Institution of Porto Novo, where he was acquainted with the Reformed Presbyterian tradition. The association was officially established in 1986. Local congregations concentrated mainly in the northern part of the country, and Ouagadougou. This work focused on the north side of the country. The church is engaged in rural developments.
The Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Togo is a church of the Bremen Mission, which began its work in the Volta region in Ghana. The first congregation was established in 1893. The church was established at the end of the 19th century. At the time of World War I, the church had 22,000 members. After the departure of the German missionaries, the church sought to maintain its unity, and in 1922 the Evangelical Ewe Church was established, uniting the francophone and anglophone churches. The French-speaking church was established by the Paris Foreign Missions Society.
The Evangelical Church of the River Plate is a United, Protestant denomination with congregations in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is named after the Río de la Plata Basin, where the majority of its congregations are located. The IERP was affiliated with the Evangelical Church in Germany from 1934–1965, when it became independent. The church ordains women as ministers and supported civil unions and same-sex marriage. It has approximately 27,500 members.
The Volkskerk van Afrika or the People's Church of Africa is a Reformed denomination in South Africa, it is member of the World Communion of Reformed Churches.
The Reformed Presbyterian Church in Africa (Uganda) was formed in 2007 by pastors and elders graduating from the Westminster Theological Seminary in Mbale, Uganda. In Uganda there are 10 congregations and 2 Presbyteries. In Kenya and Tanzania there is one Presbytery in each country.
