U.S. Route 271 is a north–south United States highway. Never a long highway, it went from bi-state route to a tri-state route. Its southern terminus is in Tyler, Texas, at an intersection with State Highway 31 and SH 155. The highway's northern terminus is in Fort Smith, Arkansas, at an intersection with Business U.S. Route 71 and Highway 255. It enters Arkansas from Oklahoma as a controlled-access highway, but the highway continues as Interstate 540 when US 271 exits toward downtown after one-half mile (800 m) in Arkansas.

State Highway 135 or SH 135 is a Texas state highway that runs from Jacksonville to near Gladewater in east Texas (USA). The route was designated on June 22, 1928 from Troup to the Rusk County Line. On March 19, 1930, it extended to Gladewater, replacing SH 15A. On October 27, 1953, an extension to Jacksonville along FM 347 was signed. On February 20, 1963, SH 135 was rerouted concurrent with SH 42, with the old route being transferred to FM 918 and Spur 378. The extension to Jacksonville was made official on August 29, 1990, completing its current route and cancelling this section of FM 347.

It is a part of the Gladewater Independent School District located in southeast Upshur County and northwest Gregg County. Gladewater High School is actually located in Upshur County. Driller Park is a baseball park in Kilgore, Texas, USA, constructed in 1947 for the Kilgore Drillers and refurbished in 2008 for the East Texas Pump Jacks of the Texas Collegiate League. The Gladewater Bears were a minor league baseball team that played in the East Texas League and Lone Star League (1948). The team was based in Gladewater, Texas and is the only known professional team to be based in that city.
Michael Wayne Gunter is a former American football running back who played one season with the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He played college football at Tulsa University and attended Gladewater High School in Gladewater, Texas. Gunter recorded 3,547 yards, 6.2 yards per carry and 37 total touchdowns in his college career. He earned first team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors as a junior and senior. He was also named the MVC's Offensive Player of the Year in 1983. Gunter was inducted into the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Hall of Fame in 1996.
Tony Loranzo Jeffery is a former American football running back who played two seasons with the Phoenix Cardinals of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Phoenix Cardinals in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft. He played college football at Texas Christian University and attended Gladewater High School in Gladewater, Texas. Jeffery was also a member of the New York/New Jersey Knights of the World League of American Football.
