The Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission (JSDCMC) (Chinese :中央军委联合参谋部) is the command organ and the headquarters for the People's Liberation Army (PLA), superseding the former PLA General Staff Department (GSD). [1] It was established on 11 January 2016, under the military reforms of Central Military Commission (CMC) chairman Xi Jinping. [2]
Headquartered in Beijing, the Joint Staff Department (JSD) is under the absolute leadership of the CMC and likely serves as an institutional link between members of the CMC and post-2016 PLA theater commands. According to the JSD, its main duties include carrying out combat support planning and combat command support, studying and formulating military strategy and requirements, organizing combat capability assessment, arranging and instructing joint training; and combat readiness and routine war preparedness work. The Intelligence Bureau of the Joint Staff Department, formerly the 2nd Bureau or '2PLA' under the GSD, is the most well-known bureau subordinate to the JSD for its role in espionage.[ citation needed ]
Since 2022, the Chief of Joint Staff Department is General Liu Zhenli. The current deputy chiefs are Lieutenant General Ma Yiming, and Major General Shao Yuanming. Prior to the 2016 rename, department heads were referred to as Chief of the General Staff Department.[ citation needed ]

The Central Military Commission (CMC) is the highest national defense organization in the People's Republic of China, which heads the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the People's Armed Police (PAP), and the Militia of China.
The People's Liberation Army Rocket Force, formerly the Second Artillery Corps, is the strategic and tactical missile force of the People's Republic of China. The PLARF is the 4th branch of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and controls China's arsenal of land-based ballistic, hypersonic, cruise missiles—both nuclear and conventional. The armed service branch was established on 1 July 1966 and made its first public appearance on 1 October 1984. The headquarters for operations is located at Qinghe, Beijing. The PLARF is under the direct command of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Military Commission (CMC).
The Central Guard Bureau of the General Office of the Chinese Communist Party, also nominally affiliated with the army and the police as the Guard Bureau of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission (中央军委联合参谋部警卫局) and the Ninth Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security (公安部九局) respectively, also known as the Central Security Bureau, is the organization responsible for overseeing the protection of senior party members, their families, and important foreign dignitaries in the People's Republic of China, though actual close protection is performed mostly by the Central Guard Regiment. It has been widely called the Central Guard Bureau since the Cultural Revolution. The bureau selects and controls the bodyguards of protectees; bodyguards are typically trained by the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The CGB is part of the internal security apparatus as protectees are constantly under surveillance by their bureau-selected bodyguards.
Zhang Qinsheng is a retired general (shangjiang) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, best known for his term as the First Deputy Chief of the PLA General Staff.

Qian Weiping is a Chinese military scientist and a former major general in the People's Liberation Army (PLA). An expert in space tracking, telemetry and command, he served as President of Beijing Institute of Tracking and Telecommunications Technology and Deputy Director of the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission.
