NTPC Kanti also known as George Fernandes Thermal Power Plant Station [1] is located in Kanti, Muzaffarpur, Bihar. [2] George Fernandes was former Member of Parliament from Muzaffarpur constituency of Bihar. It is wholly owned subsidiary company of NTPC. [3] The share of the company is 100% of the NTPC. The plant was not functional between 2003 and 2013; however, renovation of both older units paved the way for commercial production of electricity by the end of 2013. [4]

In November 2013, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that another new 500 MW power plant will be set up at Kanti. The first 195 MW unit was commissioned by BHEL at the 2×195 MW plant in March 2015. [5] [6]

The second unit of the 2×195 MW was commissioned on 13 June 2016. Muzaffarpur Thermal Power Station has an installed capacity of 610 MW. Another 500 MW extension has been planned. East Central Railway will provide uninterrupted supply of coal to the thermal power station. [7] The electrification work between Kaparpura and Kanti stations will be completed.

History

First started in 1985, Kanti Power Plant had an initial installed capacity of 110×2 MW. An additional capacity of 195×2 MW was erected in 2015-16. Kanti thermal Power Plant came into existence with the efforts of then MP of Muzaffarpur, George Fernandes. [8] [9] [10] The construction of the plant began during George's first tenure as MP of Muzaffarpur in 1978. [11] In November 2014, Kanti plant was renamed as George Fernandes Thermal Power Plant to acknowledge his contribution. [12] [13] To take over Muzaffarpur Thermal Power Station (2*110MW), a subsidiary company named Vaishali Power Generating Company Limited with NTPC on 06/09/2006,-contributing 51% of equity; and the balance equity was contributed by Bihar State Electricity Board. The company was rechristened as ‘Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam Limited’ on April 10, 2008. [14] [15] Present equity holding is 100% by ntpc and now it's not a joint venture but is a wholly owned subsidiary company of ntpc. The company renovated and modernized the existing unit.The total cost of its renovation and modernization has been over Rs. 500 crores.

In March 2013, the renovation work of two old units was completed. MTPS started commercial production from November 1, 2013 by supplying 94 MW. This is first generation in 11 years since 2002. [16] On 17 April 2018, Bihar state cabinet, headed by chief minister Nitish Kumar, gave its nod to handing over of Kanti Thermal Power Station to National Thermal Power Corporation. [17] On 15 May 2018, Bihar Government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to hand over the thermal plant to National Thermal Power Corporation for a 33- years lease. [18] [19] [20]

In May 2023, NTPC Kanti secured the first position in Bihar and tenth position in India among power generation corporations, in terms of better plant load factor in the rankings released by Central Electricity Authority (India). Its plant load factor stood at 87.58%.

BSEB was established in 1958 as a statutory corporation under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948. As of November 2012, BSEB has nearly 1,700 officers and 14,850 employees. The derated capacity comes to just 530 MW. The BSEB was unbundled on 2 August 2011. Power Finance Corporation was the main consultant for BSEB's restructuring.

It will be the country's largest power plant.

East Central Railway will provide uninterrupted supply of coal to thermal power station. NTPC completed the acquisition of 720 MW Barauni thermal power plant with effect from 15 December 2018. The units of Barauni power station will be progressively put under commercial operation. On 27 November 2021, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar inaugurated 250 Megawatts Powerhouse Unit in Barauni Thermal Power Station.

Mauda Super Thermal Power Station or NTPC Mauda is located at Mauda a Tehsil in Ramtek subdivision of Nagpur district in Nagpur revenue Division in the Berar region in the state of Maharashtra, India. The power plant is one of the coal based power plants of National Thermal Power Corporation. 1000 MW Stage 1 was dedicated to nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21 August 2014.

Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project is a coal-based thermal power plant located at Sivanpur village in Nabinagar taluk in Aurangabad district, Bihar. It was conceptualised in 1989 by the then Chief Minister of Bihar Satyendra Narayan Sinha who sent the proposal to set up a NTPC's super thermal power project at Nabinagar in Bihar's Aurangabad district to then Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi; but the project went into limbo as the following state governments failed to follow it. In 2007, Manmohan Singh's government finally put a stamp of approval on it.

Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Station is a coal based thermal power project located at near by Gangai village in Gadarwara Tehsil in Narsinghpur District in Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The power plant is one of the coal based power plants of NTPC Limited. Bharat Heavy Electricals and Archived 30 March 2017 at the Wayback Machine are the critical equipment supplier.

The Nabinagar Thermal Power Station Project (NTPS) of Bhartiya Rail Bijlee Company Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Indian Railways, Ministry of Railways, Government of India. It installs a 4X 250 MW thermal power plant at Nabinagar in Aurangabad district, Bihar, India. Nearly 90 per cent of the electricity generated from the plant is supplied to the railways to meet nationwide requirements and remaining 10 per cent is given to Bihar.

The Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) is a coal-fired power station in Pegadapalli, a village in Mancheriyal District of Telangana, India. The power plant has an installed capacity of 1200 MW, consisting of two 600 MW units, and is operated by the Singareni Collieries Company.
