List of special elections to the Minnesota House of Representatives

This is a list of special elections to the Minnesota House of Representatives. Such elections are called by the governor of Minnesota to fill vacancies that occur when a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives dies or resigns before the biennial general election. Winners of these elections serve the remainder of the term and are usually candidates in the next election for their districts.

Contents

General elections are held in November of even numbered years. New Legislatures convene on the first Tuesday following the first Monday of the following year.

Kurt Louis Daudt is an American politician and former Minority Leader of the Minnesota House of Representatives. He is also a former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, he represented District 27B, which included portions of Anoka, Isanti, and Sherburne counties in east-central Minnesota, north of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. He lives on his family farm in Crown, Minnesota.

Susan Allen is an American politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), she represented District 62B, a southside district encompassing the Powderhorn and Bryant neighborhoods of Minneapolis. She was the first Native American woman to serve in the Minnesota Legislature and the first openly lesbian Native American to win election to a state legislature. She did not seek re-election in 2018.

Kari Dziedzic is an American politician, and the Majority Leader of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), she represents District 60, which includes portions of the city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. Her district is also notable for including part of the University of Minnesota. In 2022, she was selected by her caucus to serve as Senate Majority Leader for the 93rd Minnesota Legislature. She previously served as executive assistant to U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone.

The Eighty-ninth Minnesota Legislature was the legislature of the U.S. state of Minnesota from January 6, 2015, to January 2, 2017. It was composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives, based on the results of the 2012 Senate election and the 2014 House election. The seats were apportioned based on the 2010 United States census. It first convened in Saint Paul on January 6, 2015, and last met on May 23, 2016. It held its regular session from January 6 to May 18, 2015, and from March 8 to May 23, 2016. A special session to complete unfinished business was held from June 12 to 13, 2015.

Kelly Morrison is an American doctor and politician serving in the Minnesota Senate since 2023. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, Morrison represents District 45 in the western Twin Cities metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Minnetonka, Mound, Minnetrista, and Orono in Hennepin County. She served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023.

Nathan Nelson is an American politician serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2019. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, Nelson represents District 11B in east-central Minnesota, which includes the cities of Mora, Rush City and Hinckley, and parts of Chisago, Kanabec and Pine Counties.

A special election was held in the U.S. state of Minnesota on February 4, 2020, to elect a new member for District 30A in the Minnesota House of Representatives, caused by the resignation of Republican member Nick Zerwas. A primary election was held on January 14, 2020, to nominate Republican candidate. Paul Novotny, the Republican nominee, won the special election.

A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, Novotny represents District 30B in east-central Minnesota, which includes the cities of Elk River and Otsego and parts of Anoka, Sherburne, and Wright Counties.

These midterm elections coincided with other state and local elections, including gubernatorial elections in multiple states.
