Much of the town is a Conservation Area. Because of the amount of wildlife in and near the River Test, its course and banks are designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The village is part of the civil parish of Litchfield and Woodcott, [1] and is part of the Burghclere, Highclere and St Mary Bourne ward of Basingstoke and Deane borough council. [2] The borough council is a Non-metropolitan district of Hampshire County Council.
