Mississippi Highway 23 (MS 23) is a state highway in Mississippi. The route starts at MS 25 in the town of Smithville. It travels northeastward through the forests of eastern Itawamba County. The highway intersects Interstate 22 (I-22) and U.S. Route 78 (US 78) in Tremont. MS 23 ends at the Mississippi–Alabama state line, just west of Red Bay.

The routing that became part of MS 23 was first constructed as a graded road in 1925, from north of Amory to the state line. Gravel was added to sections of the route in the 1930s. The designation was added to maps around 1950, and it was extended to Smithville in 1960. The route was fully paved by 1980.

The highway is located in northern Monroe and eastern Itawamba counties. [3] [4] MS 23 is legally defined in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3, [5] and is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation as part of the state highway system. The section of the route from Tremont to the Mississippi–Alabama state line is designated as Tammy Wynette Memorial Highway, [1] named after the country music singer–songwriter who grew up near Tremont. MS 23 starts at an intersection with MS 25 in the town of Smithville and travels eastward. It leaves the city limits at Seminole Road and crosses Mill Creek shortly after. [3] The road travels through a rural area, and turns northward at George Pearce Road. [9] Past Jug Shop Road, MS 23 crosses the Itawamba County line. [3] Upon entering the county, the route crosses Bluff Creek and travels northeastward. [4] At Bull Mountain Road, the road enters a forest. [9] Traveling past the community of Turon, the road turns further north into the county. Over the next few miles, MS 23 crosses over Smith and Jims creeks and travels toward Cadamy. [4] The road travels north past Cadamy, turning into a divided highway. It meets I-22 and US 78 at a diamond interchange, just within the corporate limits of Tremont. Past the interchange, MS 23 changes back to a two-lane road and intersects MS 178, the beginning of a short concurrency through the town. [9]

Once the concurrency begins, MS 23 and MS 178 travel westward through the center of Tremont. [10] MS 23 departs from MS 178 to the north less than one mile (1.6 km) later, ending the concurrency. It travels northeastward into the forest, and soon leaves the corporate limits. [10] At Cotton Gin Road, MS 23 turns north, crosses Mountain Creek and intersects Mt. Gilead Road and Hartsell Road in the center of Bounds Crossroads. [9] [4] The route intersects MS 76 and later parallels that divided highway. [9] MS 23 shifts slightly north past Pineville Road, and it ends at the Mississippi–Alabama state line. [4] Past this point, County Road 3, also known as Tammy Wynette Memorial Highway, continues to Red Bay in Franklin County, Alabama. [9] [7] [11]

History

The MS 23 designation was used for another route from 1932 to 1940. The routing was from Starkville to Shannon when it was first designated. [12] The section from Shannon to Okolona was paved by 1937. [13] [14] The next year, six miles (9.7 km) of the route was paved from West Point southwards. [14] [15] MS 25 was extended south in 1939, replacing all of MS 23 from Starkville to north of West Point. [15] [16] The MS 23 designation was replaced with the MS 45W one by 1940. [16] [17] MS 45W was renumbered in 1968 to US 45 Alternate, its current designation. [18] [19]

The earliest sections of the current routing of MS 23 have existed since 1925, [20] and the road that became MS 23 was part of the state map in 1928 as a graded road. The road traveled from north of Amory to the state line. [21] The section from US 78 northward was paved in gravel by 1933. [12] [22] It was straightened out and extended southwestward three years later. [23] [13] The route designation re-appeared on the state map by 1950. [24] [25] A small section near Tremont was paved five years later, [26] [27] and the majority of the route was paved by 1957. [28] [29] MS 23 was extended to MS 25 and Smithville along a gravel road, and the entire section north of US 78 was paved in 1960. [30] [31] The Monroe County section of the route was paved in 1965, [32] [33] and a part of the route south of Tremont was paved in 1973. [34] [35] The entire route was paved by 1980. [36] [37] In 1991, US 78 was rerouted onto a divided highway, and a new interchange was constructed at MS 23. [38] [39] A part of the Appalachian Development Highway System, Corridor V, was constructed to MS 23 by 2014. [40] [41]

MS 365 continues northeastward and ends at MS 25 west of Pickwick Lake. The route was designated by 1950, connecting from MS 30 to MS 364. It was extended northward to MS 356 around 1958 and was completely paved by 1964. The route replaced parts of MS 356 in 1965, and its northern terminus was changed to MS 25.

Mississippi Highway 2 is a designation for two highways in northern Mississippi. The westernmost segment starts at MS 5 in Hickory Flat, and ends at MS 15 and MS 368 in Blue Mountain. The eastern segment starts at MS 4 near Ripley and it travels northeastwards towards Corinth. The route becomes concurrent with U.S. Route 72 and US 45 in Corinth, and ends at the Tennessee state line. The road continues as Tennessee State Route 22. The route was designated around 1932, from the state line near Mount Pleasant to the state line near Corinth. The section west of Corinth became a part of US 72 by 1935, and the route was extended southwestwards to Hickory Flat by 1958.

Mississippi Highway 53 is a state highway in Mississippi. The highway starts at U.S. Highway 49 in Gulfport and travels northwestward to MS 603 in Hancock County. The road then travels north to Poplarville, meeting Interstate 59 (I-59). MS 53 ends at MS 26 and US 11 in southwestern Poplarville. The road that became MS 53 has existed since 1928, and the highway was designated in 1950. The highway was completely paved by 1957, and an interchange was created at I-59 in 1967.

Mississippi Highway 76 (MS 76) is an east-west state highway in Itawamba County, Mississippi. It is a section of Mississippi's portion of Corridor V of the Appalachian Development Highway System. It branches off northeast from MS 25 northeast of Fulton and passes through the northeast quadrant of rural Itawamba County before connecting with Alabama's SR 24 section at the state line, just barely outside the city limits of Red Bay, Alabama.

Mississippi Highway 450 is a highway in western Mississippi. Its western terminus is at MS 1 south of Benoit. The route travels east to its eastern terminus at U.S. Route 61 and US 278. It was designated in 1956, starting at MS 1 south of Scott, and ending at Choctaw. Starting in 1962, the section near Stringtown was rerouted significantly. The last realignment was in 1974, where the section near Stringtown was straightened, and US 61 moved east of Choctaw.

The road continues eastward across northern Tate County and ends at MS 305 near Independence. MS 306 was designated in 1952, and it was constructed in 1953 from US 51 to MS 305. MS 500 was designated in 1960 as a gravel road, and it was completely paved with asphalt eight years later.

Mississippi Highway 41 (MS 41) is a state highway in northeastern Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 45 and US 278 north of Wren and travels westwards. It then intersects US 45 Alt. east of Okolona. The road enters Okolona, and intersects MS 32 and MS 245. MS 41 then turns northwest and travels toward Pontotoc. Once inside the city, the route turns north at MS 15 and travels through downtown Pontotoc. MS 41 ends at its intersection with MS 9 and MS 338. The route that became MS 41 was first used as an Indian trail. The route was designated by 1932 from Amory to Pontotoc, and it was truncated from Amory to US 45 by 1955. The entirety of MS 41 was paved by 1958.

Mississippi Highway 569 is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route starts at the Mississippi–Louisiana state line, and it travels northeastward from that point. It intersects MS 48 southwest of Liberty, and MS 569 becomes concurrent with it. Inside Liberty, MS 569 is also concurrent with MS 24 briefly before travelling northeastward out of the city. It continues through Amite County and it ends at U.S. Route 98 in extreme southwestern Lincoln County.

Mississippi Highway 434 is a short state highway in western Mississippi. The route travels from U.S. Route 61 near Nitta Yuma and travels eastward. After crossing a creek, the road travels northeastward and enters Delta City, and the route ends inside the unincorporated community. The route was constructed around 1951, connecting from US 61 to Delta City. An extension along a county road to US 49W existed from 1957 to 1967.

Mississippi Highway 436 is a state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at Eastside Lake Washington Road in Glen Allan and travels eastward. The road intersects MS 1 in Hampton and turns northeastward. It ends near Percy at U.S. Route 61. MS 436 was designated in 1957, along a road from US 61 to a point near the Washington–Sharkey county line. The route was extended westward to Glen Allan along a state-maintained road in 1958, and also eastward to Belzoni via a county road in 1967. The route east of US 61 was decommissioned by 1967.

North of Starkville, the route continues northwestwards and ends at the Oktibbeha–Clay county line south of Pheba.
