Multan Division is an administrative division of Punjab Province, Pakistan. It was created during British colonial rule in South Asia in 19th century. Division's recorded population is 14 million in 2023 census report. [3] [4]

Multan Division was created during the British colonial rule in the South Asia. During British rule, All the districts that later formed Dera Ghazi Khan Division, collectively formed districts of Multan Division up till 1982 when new Dera Ghazi Khan Division was formed. [6] Sahiwal region was part of the division till 2008 when separate Sahiwal division was created. [7] [8]
The division lay between 28°25' and 33°13 N and 69°19' and 73°39 E, the Sutlej divided it from Bahawalpur on the south-east, while the Indus flowed partly through the Division and partly along its border to the west. The headquarters of the Commissioner were at Multan (or in the hot season, at Fort Munro). The Division was abolished in 1884, but reconstituted in 1901.
According to the 1881 census of India the population of the area now included was 2,036,956, in 1891 it had risen to 2,277,605, and in 1901 to 3,014,675 and the total area was 29,520 square miles (76,500 km2).
According to 2017 census, Multan division had a population of 12,268,173, which includes 6,243,053 males and 6,023,825females. Multan division constitutes 1,578 Hindus, 12,163,327 Muslims, 97,278 Christians,4,264 Ahmadi followed by 1,357scheduled castes and 369 others.

Punjab is a province of Pakistan. Located in central-eastern region of the country, Punjab is the second-largest province of Pakistan by land area and the largest by population. Lahore is the capital and the largest city of the province. Other major cities include Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Multan.
West Punjab was a province in the Dominion of Pakistan from 1947 to 1955. It was established from the western-half of British Punjab, following the independence of Pakistan. The province covered an area of 159,344 km sq, including much of the current Punjab province and the Islamabad Capital Territory, but excluding the former Princely state of Bahawalpur. Lahore, being the largest city and the cultural centre, served as the capital of the province. The province was composed of four divisions and was bordered by the state of Bahawalpur to the south-east, the province of Baluchistan to the south-west and Sind to the south, North-West Frontier Province to the north-west, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir to the north. It shared International border with Indian state of East Punjab to the east and Indian-administered Jammu & Kashmir to the north-east. It was dissolved and merged into West Pakistan upon creation of One Unit Scheme, in 1955.
Dera Ismail Khan, abbreviated as D.I. Khan, is a city and capital of Dera Ismail Khan District, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The region comprises the Bahawalpur, Multan, Sahiwal and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions. The proposed province would form about 52 percent of the total area and almost 40 percent of the population of the current Punjab province.
