Nance, Missouri

Nance is an extinct town in eastern Taney County, in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. [1] The townsite sits above the east bank of the west fork of Big Creek about one mile north of U.S. Route 160 and about 1.7 miles west of the Taney - Ozark county line. [2] The site is at an elevation of 876 feet. [1]

History

Early variant names were "Bauff" and "Dit". [1] A post office called Bauff was established in 1858, and closed in 1894. The post office reopened as Dit in 1899, was renamed Nance in 1908, and was discontinued in 1925. [3] The last given name was in honor of Jeff Nance, a local civil servant. [4]

The community once had Nance Schoolhouse, now defunct. [5]

The Hilda Lookout Tower in approximately one mile south on Lime Kiln Mountain. Hilda is part of the Branson Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Foil is an unincorporated community in northern Ozark County, Missouri, United States. It is located approximately sixteen miles south of Ava on county roads 953 and 955. Wasola is about four miles northeast on Missouri Route 5 and Thornfield approximately three miles southwest on Missouri Route JJ. The community is on the banks of Little Creek, a tributary of Little North Fork White River.

Bryant is an extinct town in Douglas County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. Bryant is located adjacent to Bryant Creek just north of the Mill Hollow confluence with Bryant Creek and the Missouri Highway 5 bridge over Bryant Creek. The old store known as Midway was located one mile downstream at the old Bryant bridge along old Highway 5 at 37°01′46″N92°35′43″W.

Fay is an unincorporated community in southeastern Ozark County, in the Ozarks of south-central Missouri, United States. The community is located along Missouri Route J, approximately 2.5 miles south of U.S. Route 160. The Fay Cemetery lies just west of Route J and north of the Lick Creek - Sweeten Creek junction.

Luna is an extinct town in Ozark County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. The community is on a ridge between Bryant Creek to the east and Pine Creek to the west and is located on Missouri Route FF. Zanoni, on Missouri Route 181, lies approximately two miles to the northwest. The community church is one and one-half miles west on Caney Creek and Missouri Route AA. The Pine Creek confluence with Bryant Creek is one and one-quarter miles to the south, at the north end of Norfork Lake.

Oak Mound is an unincorporated community in eastern Ozark County, in the Ozarks of south-central Missouri, United States. The community was located on Bond Ridge and the Oak Mound Cemetery lies adjacent to the south side of Missouri Route KK. The North Fork of the White River lies just over one mile west of the site.

Pondfork is an unincorporated community in northwest Ozark County, Missouri, United States. Pondfork lies on the Hay Hollow tributary to Pond Fork Creek, which lies to the west. The community is approximately three miles west-southwest of Thornfield. Access is via Missouri Route D, from Missouri Route 95 to the southeast. Pondfork lies within the Mark Twain National Forest.

Day is an unincorporated community in Taney County, in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. Day is located in the northwest part of the county, just south of the Taney-Christian county line on Missouri Route 176 and approximately one mile west of U.S. Route 65.

Eastview is an extinct town in northeastern Taney County, in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The location is along a ridge occupied by Farm Road 147 which is a portion of the scenic Glade Top Trail within the Mark Twain National Forest.

Garber is an unincorporated community in western Taney County in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. Garber is located along the Missouri Pacific Railroad line and Roark Creek, approximately four miles northwest of Branson.

Gravelly Hollow is a valley in northern Taney County in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The stream in the valley is a tributary to Bull Creek.

Hercules is an unincorporated community in Taney County, in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. Hercules is located on Missouri Route 125, south of Bradleyville and just northeast of the Hercules Glades Wilderness protected area. The townsite is adjacent to Brushy Creek and within the Mark Twain National Forest.

Kentucky Hollow is a stream valley in northeastern Taney County in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The stream is a northwest flowing tributary to Beaver Creek. Its confluence with Beaver is 1.5 miles east of Bradleyville. The stream is bridged by Missouri Route 76 about one half mile south of the confluence. The stream is within the Mark Twain National Forest.

Mildred is an unincorporated community in Taney County, in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. Mildred is located on Missouri Route 76, south of Forsyth and east of Kirbyville.

Mincy is an unincorporated community in south-central Taney County, in the Ozarks of southern Missouri, United States. Mincy is located approximately four miles north of the Missouri-Arkansas border and near the upper end of Bull Shoals Lake of the White River. Mincy is the namesake for the Drury-Mincy Conservation Area to the south and east.

Ozark Beach is an unincorporated community in Taney County, in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The site is on the shoreline of Lake Taneycomo, approximately one mile west (upstream) of Powersite Dam.
