Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China. It is a sub-provincial city, and a megacity. The city has 11 districts, an administrative area of 6,600 km2 (2,500 sq mi), and a population of 9,423,400 as of 2021. Situated in the Yangtze River Delta region, Nanjing has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments dating from the 3rd century to 1949, and has thus long been a major center of culture, education, research, politics, economy, transport networks and tourism, being the home to one of the world's largest inland ports. The city is also one of the fifteen sub-provincial cities in the People's Republic of China's administrative structure, enjoying jurisdictional and economic autonomy only slightly less than that of a province. Nanjing has been ranked seventh in the evaluation of "Cities with Strongest Comprehensive Strength" issued by the National Statistics Bureau, and second in the evaluation of cities with most sustainable development potential in the Yangtze River Delta. It has also been awarded the title of 2008 Habitat Scroll of Honor of China, Special UN Habitat Scroll of Honor Award and National Civilized City. Nanjing is also considered a Beta city classification, together with Chongqing, Hangzhou and Tianjin by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and ranked as one of the world's top 100 cities in the Global Financial Centres Index.

The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, previously called the First Nanjing Yangtze Bridge, is a double-decked road-rail truss bridge across the Yangtze River in Nanjing, Jiangsu, connecting the city's Pukou and Gulou districts. Its upper deck is part of China National Highway 104, spanning 4,588 metres (15,052 ft). Its lower deck, with a double-track railway, is 6,772 metres (22,218 ft) long, and completes the Beijing–Shanghai railway, which had been divided by the Yangtze for decades. Its right bridge consists of nine piers, with the maximum span of 160 metres (525 ft) and the total length of 1,576 metres (5,171 ft). The bridge carries approximately 80,000 vehicles and 190 trains per day.

Nanjing International Expo Center is an exposition center and also a landmark in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. It has an exposition area of 120,000 square meters. The Expo Center facilities include six exposition pavilions, 38 conference rooms and a multi-function pavilion, and it is capable of hosting exhibitions with over 4,500 international standard large-scale exhibition booths. Two more exposition pavilions, a business hotel and a conference center hotel are planned.

Opened on 3 September 2005 for the Line 1 portion of the station, Gulou station is among the first Nanjing Metro stations to open for passenger service. The line 4 section of the station opened on 18 January 2017, with cultural exhibits lining the station's walls. Located underneath a roundabout that links to Beijing West Road, Beijing East Road, Zhongyang Road, Zhongshan Road and Zhongshan North Road, Gulou station is located near Gulou Hospital, Nanjing University's Gulou campus, and is right underneath the Zifeng Tower.
