The AMD Professional Gamers League (PGL), founded around 1997, was one of the first professional computer gaming eSports leagues. The PGL was run by Total Entertainment Network and was sponsored by AMD. [1] The first professional tournament they held was for StarCraft in September 1997. [2] The league was official unveiled at a press conference at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on November 3, 1997. [3] It was sponsored by Microsoft, [4] Nvidia, [5] and Levi Strauss & Co. [6] The organization raised over $1.2mil USD in sponsorship money. [7]
Nearly 1,400 players took part in the first Quake tournament, which took place online. [8] The first-ever Professional Gamers League Finals took place on January 30 and January 31, 1998, in Seattle, Washington at the Sega GameWorks super-arcade. Two games were played in this competition, Command & Conquer: Red Alert and Quake . Both tournaments featured 1 on 1 play with David "DeepBlue" Magro winning the Red Alert tournament and Dennis "Thresh" Fong winning the Quake tournament. Both players won $7,500 and new AMD computers. [9]
Season 3 hosted the first ever Starcraft World Championship where 128 players from around the globe competed online from August 14 - September 6, 1998. The final 8 competitors played live in San Francisco, CA. Jay "Gadianton" Severson took first place playing random and going undefeated in the double-elimination bracket to win $8500 and a new AMD computer.[ citation needed ]

It was founded by Angel Munoz on June 27, 1997, in Dallas, Texas. The CPL is considered the pioneer in professional video game tournaments, which have been held worldwide. The CPL's tournaments are open to all registrants, but due to the ESRB content rating of some video games, CPL competitions are restricted to participants age 17 or older. The CPL has distributed more than US$3 million in cash prizes.
Johnathan Wendel, also known as Fatal1ty, is an American entrepreneur and former professional esports player. He played in his first major tournament in late 1999 and won a world championship in Quake III in 2000. From 2001 to 2005, Wendel won world championship titles in four other first-person shooter games: Aliens vs. Predator 2 in 2001, Unreal Tournament 2003 in 2002, Doom 3 in 2004, and Painkiller in 2005. Described as "esports' first superstar", he was an early pioneer of competitive gaming and was featured in shows such as True Life and 60 Minutes. For his impact on competitive gaming, Wendel has been awarded two "Lifetime Achievement" awards and has been enshrined both the International Video Game Hall of Fame and the Esports Hall of Fame. He also started his own company Fatal1ty Inc. in 2002, which licenses his brand to gaming accessory manufacturers.

He actively competes in international Quake competitions and was signed to Razer and Dutch electronic sports team Serious Gaming and French organization Millenium, but is now signed to British organisation Endpoint. On July 8, 2007, at age 16, he became the youngest Quake champion ever after winning the Electronic Sports World Cup 2007 in Paris without losing a single map.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championships, commonly known as the Majors, are Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) esports tournaments sponsored by Valve, the game's developer. The PGL Major Antwerp 2022, also known as PGL Major 2022 or Antwerp 2022, was the seventeenth Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) Major Championship. It was held in Antwerp, Belgium at the Sportpaleis from May 9 to 22, 2022. Twenty-four teams participated, with most qualifying through regional tournaments. It featured a US$1,000,000 prize pool, half of the previous Major. It was the third Major hosted by the Romanian organization PGL, after PGL Major: Kraków 2017 and PGL Major Stockholm 2021. The Major would be won by FaZe Clan, the first international team in CS:GO history to win a Major.
