Qiemo Airport was an airport serving Qiemo Town in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. After passenger service to the airport ended in 2011, a 2012 CAAC report stated that Qiemo Airport had been closed. It was replaced by Qiemo Yudu Airport in December 2016, where Qiemo Town regained commercial air service.

History

Qiemo Airport received its last passenger flights in 2011. [1] In the same year, civil aviation officials in Xinjiang announced that a new airport would be built to serve Qiemo Town. [2] In its 2012 Civil Aviation Development Statistics Bulletin, the CAAC reported that Qiemo Airport had been closed. [3] The new airport, Qiemo Yudu Airport, opened on 19 December 2016, where commercial air service to Qiemo Town resumed. [1] The new airport has a runway longer than that of Qiemo Airport. [4] [5]

Infrastructure

The airport resided at an elevation of 1,252 metres (4,108 ft) above mean sea level. It had one paved runway with dimensions 1,700 by 25 metres (5,577 ft × 82 ft). [6]

Tianjin Airlines Flight 7554 2012 attempted aircraft hijacking

Tianjin Airlines Flight 7554 was a scheduled passenger flight between Hotan and Ürümqi in China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region. The aircraft operating this route on 29 June 2012, an Embraer 190, took off from Hotan at 12:25 pm; within ten minutes, six ethnic Uyghur men, one of whom allegedly professed his motivation as jihad, announced their intent to hijack the aircraft, according to multiple witnesses. In response, passengers and crew resisted and successfully restrained the hijackers, who were armed with aluminium crutches and explosives.

Qionghai Boao Airport

Qionghai Bo'ao Airport is an airport serving the city of Qionghai in Hainan Province, China. The airport received approval from the national government in January 2013, and was opened on 17 March 2016 after three years of construction.

Zhalantun Chengjisihan Airport

Zhalantun Chengjisihan Airport is an airport that serves the city of Zhalantun in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, China. It is located near Chengjisihan Town, 14.2 kilometres (8.8 mi) from the city center. The airport opened in December 2016.

Qiemo Yudu Airport

Qiemo Yudu Airport is an airport that serves Qiemo Town in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. Located roughly 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) northwest of the town, the airport has a 4,500-square-metre (48,000 sq ft) terminal and a runway that measures 2,800 metres (9,200 ft). It replaced another airport serving the town, which has a shorter runway, on 19 December 2016. China Southern Airlines offers flights to Ürümqi via Korla.
