South African Orienteering Federation (SAOF) is the national Orienteering Association in South Africa. SAOF was founded in 1981, and is recognized as the orienteering association for South Africa by the International Orienteering Federation, of which it is a member. [1]

SAOF is a member of the umbrella organization, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). [2]

Orienteering championships

SAOF organizes the South African Orienteering championships, which was first held in Silvermine in 1983. The organization selects representatives from South Africa to participate at the World Orienteering Championships (first SAOF participation was in 1993), and they regularly participate at the Junior World Orienteering Championships. [3] [4]

Honorary life members

Honorary life members are Piers Chapman (chairman of SAOF from 1984 to 1988) and Michael Wilson (instrumental in founding SAOF, as well as the RAND Orienteering Club). [5]

Christian Aebersold is a Swiss orienteering competitor. He is three times Relay World Champion, as a member of the Swiss winning teams in 1991, 1993 and 1995. He is also a four time Swiss champion over the long distance.

Orienteering Australia is the National organisation responsible for the governing, organisation and promotion of orienteering in Australia. It is a Full Member of the International Orienteering Federation. Orienteering Australia has its own publication The Australian Orienteer.

The Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships were first held in 1994. Since 1998, competitions have been held annually. Representative countries must be members of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF).

Eveli Saue is an Estonian orienteering competitor and retired biathlete. She is world champion in the combined sport biathlon orienteering.

Erik Rost is a Swedish ski-orienteering competitor, winner of the overall world cup, and junior world champion.

Marius Bjugan is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. He won a gold medal in the middle distance at the 2001 Junior World Orienteering Championships in Miskolc. He represented Norway at the 2008 World Orienteering Championships in Olomouc.

Signe Søes is a Danish orienteering competitor. She won a silver medal in the short distance at the 2003 Junior World Orienteering Championships in Põlva. She placed fourth in the sprint, 10th in the middle and 12th in the long distance at the 2009 World Orienteering Championships in Miskolc. At the 2008 and 2010 World Cups, she placed 2nd. At the European Championships 2014 at Palmela, Portugal, Søes became European Champion in the middle distance winning a gold medal.

Ida Bobach is a Danish orienteering competitor who was Junior World Champion in 2009, and became triple Junior World Champion from 2010, when she won the sprint, long distance and the relay. She represents the club OK Pan Århus, and since 2007, has received training from Danish national coach Lars Lindstrøm. In 2015 she won gold medals at the World Championships in the long and Relay.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tove Alexandersson</span>

Tove Alexandersson is a Swedish orienteer, ski orienteer, skyrunner and ski mountaineer. She has won a total of 17 gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships and 10 gold medals at the World Ski Orienteering Championships. In 2018, she won the Sky Marathon event at the Skyrunning World Championships, in her second skyrunning race ever. In 2021, she won the combined discipline at the World Championships of Ski Mountaineering. She competes for Stora Tuna OK in orienteering and Alfta-Ösa OK in ski orienteering. Alexandersson holds the record for the number of gold medals in a row at the World Orienteering Championships, winning 11 in a row between 2018 and 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Olle Boström</span> Swedish orienteer

Olle Boström is a Swedish orienteering competitor. He placed sixth in the long course at the 2011 World Orienteering Championships in Chambéry, and won a bronze medal with the Swedish relay team.
