The newspaper was founded in 1884 and was based in Thomson House, Cardiff city centre. It is published by Media Wales Ltd (formerly Western Mail & Echo Ltd), part of the Reach plc group. In 2008, Media Wales moved from Thomson House, Havelock Street and Park Street, to Six Park Street and Scott Road, west of the former main offices and printing plant, south of the Principality Stadium. [4] There is a Weekend edition published every Saturday.

Among many other writers, novelist Ken Follett, science writer Brian J. Ford, cartoonist Gren Jones, journalist Sue Lawley [5] and news reader Michael Buerk, have spent part of their careers with the Echo.

Football Echo

An associated paper, the Football Echo, later called the Sport Echo, was published on Saturday afternoons from 1919 until 2006. Printed on-site, on pink paper, it was available soon after the final whistle of rugby and football matches, across the street. At its peak the Football Echo sold up to 80,000 copies. [6]

As the capital of Wales, media in Cardiff plays a large role in the city and nationwide. Employment in the sector has grown significantly in recent years, and currently provides employment for 2.1% of the city's workforce – higher than the level across Wales (1.1%) and marginally lower than that across Great Britain as a whole (2.2%).

In the UK, a Saturday sports paper was a local newspaper published on a Saturday evening containing information about sports matches played on that day. Throughout most of the twentieth century they were very popular, representing one of the few up to date sources of information available to sports fans. Gradually, circulations fell and all had ceased publication by December 2017, with the exception of Portsmouth's Sports Mail, which moved to publishing on a Sunday, finally ending publication in July 2022.

The Bournemouth Daily Echo, commonly known as the Daily Echo, is a local newspaper that covers the area of southeast Dorset, England, including the towns Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch. Published by Newsquest (Southern) Limited, issues appear Monday to Saturday, and has an average daily circulation of 9,589 in January to June 2020.
