The Central African Republic is divided into 16 prefectures (14 administrative prefectures and 2 economic prefectures ) and one autonomous commune. The prefectures (préfectures) are further divided into 71 sub-prefectures (sous-préfectures).

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Chad to the north, Sudan to the northeast, South Sudan to the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south, the Republic of the Congo to the southwest and Cameroon to the west. The CAR covers a land area of about 620,000 square kilometres (240,000 sq mi) and had an estimated population of around 4.6 million as of 2016.

A prefecture is an administrative jurisdiction or subdivision in any of various countries and within some international church structures, and in antiquity a Roman district governed by an appointed prefect.

Bamingui-Bangoran Prefecture in Central African Republic

Bamingui-Bangoran is one of the 16 prefectures of the Central African Republic. It covers an area of 58,200 km² and has a population of 38,437. The population density of 0.66/km² is the lowest in the country. The capital is Ndélé.

Basse-Kotto Prefecture in Central African Republic

Basse-Kotto is one of the 16 and the least populated prefecture of the Central African Republic. Its capital is Mobaye.

Haute-Kotto Prefecture in Central African Republic

Haute-Kotto is one of the 16 prefectures of the Central African Republic. Its capital is Bria. It is the largest prefecture in the Central African Republic.

The two economic prefectures are Nana-Grébizi and Sangha-Mbaéré; the special commune and capital city is Bangui.

Nana-Grébizi Prefecture in Central African Republic

Nana-Grébizi is one of the 16 prefectures of the Central African Republic. It covers an area of 19,996 km² and has a population of 87,341. The capital is Kaga Bandoro.

Sangha-Mbaéré is one of the 16 prefectures of the Central African Republic. Its capital is Nola.

Bangui Place in Central African Republic

Bangui is the capital and largest city of the Central African Republic. As of 2012 it had an estimated population of 734,350. It was established as a French outpost in 1889 and named after its location on the northern bank of the Ubangi River ; the Ubangi itself was named from the Bobangi word for the "rapids" located beside the settlement, which marked the end of navigable water north from Brazzaville. The majority of the population of the Central African Republic lives in the western parts of the country, in Bangui and the surrounding area.

Ouham River

The Ouham River is a river in Central Africa, and one of the main headwaters of the Chari River. The Ouham originates in the Central African Republic between the prefecture Nana-Mambéré and the prefecture Ouham-Pendé, crossing into Chad where it joins the Chari about 25 km north Sarh. Tributaries are Baba, Fafa, Nana Bakassa, Nana Barya.
