Tendai Larry Chatara (born 28 February 1991) is an international cricketer who represents the Zimbabwe national cricket team. A tall,wiry fast bowler with appreciable pace and the ability to move the ball away from the right-hander,Chatara has risen quickly to prominence since his first-class debut for Mountaineers in 2009. Though he was not good academically in school,he is one of the most talented pace prospects of his country. [1]
Chatara is naturally athletic. He represented his home town Manicaland in 200 and 400 m events,before getting a call-up to cricket.
Chatara played for Zimbabwe at U-19 Level and has played one match for the senior cricket team. He also played for them at the ICC Intercontinental Cup as a part of the Zimbabwe XI in 2009.
Chatara was quite brilliant in the domestic circuit,especially in his first-class career. He made his first-class debut in 2009 for Mountaineers against Mid West Rhinos. He immediately made an impression giving away just 25 runs from 7 overs in the first innings with a brilliant economy rate of 3.57. [2] He soon rose to prominence with 71 wickets from just 20 matches. He performed well in other formats as well such as List A and Twenty20 cricket.
Chatara made his List A debut for Mountaineers against Mashonaland Eagles. In the match,he got his maiden List A wicket with the dismissal of Cephas Zhuwao. [3]
Chatara made his Twenty20 debut for Mountaineers against Mid West Rhinos in 2010,taking 1 wicket,his maiden Twenty20 wicket,with the dismissal of Zimbabwe's wicket keeper-batsman,Brendan Taylor. [4]
In December 2020,Chatara was selected to play for the Mountaineers in the 2020–21 Logan Cup. [5] [6]
Chatara's excellent domestic performances prompted the Zimbabwean selectors to select him for the senior cricket team's Twenty20 International series against India,captained by Suresh Raina. He made his debut in the second T20I where he took his maiden wicket at international senior level with the dismissal of Yusuf Pathan. [7]
That same year,Chatara represented his nation,in the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup,and the following year,in 2011,he was selected for Zimbabwe's tri-nation series against Australia and South Africa A cricket teams. [8]
In January 2015,Chatara was named in Zimbabwe's 15 man squad for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. [9] [10] [11]
In February 2016,Chatara was named in Zimbabwe's 15 man squad for the 2016 T20 World Cup. [12]
In June 2018,Chatara was named in a Board XI team for warm-up fixtures ahead of the 2018 Zimbabwe Tri-Nation Series. [13]
In May 2021,Chatara was named as the captain in the Zimbabwe A's squad for their home series against South Africa. [14]
In July 2021,Chatara was named in Zimbabwe's 20 man Test squad for their one-off Test against Bangladesh. It was Chatara's return to the Test squad after three years having last played a Test against the same opposition in November 2018 at the time. [15] [16]
Prosper Utseya is a retired Zimbabwean cricketer,who plays all formats of the game. He was the former captain of Zimbabwe from 2006 to 2010. He bowls right-arm off break and is a useful right-hand batsman. Utseya has not played any form of cricket since 2015.
Brendan Ross Murray Taylor is a Zimbabwean former international cricketer and a former Zimbabwean captain,who played all formats of the game. Taylor is a right-handed batsman but is also an off spinner. In 2015,former Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell described Taylor as "our standout player for the last seven or eight years". He is known for his unorthodox shots especially his ability to play upper cuts over the third man and ramp shots with elegance and are often considered as his trademark signature shots. His style of play and ability to make substantial contribution with the bat often drew comparions with that of Andy Flower. He represented Zimbabwe in four ICC T20 World Cup tournaments in 2007,2010,2012 and 2014. Also,he represented Zimbabwe in three ICC ODI world cups as well in 2007,2011 and 2015.
Elton Chigumbura is a Zimbabwean former cricketer,who played for Zimbabwe national cricket team between 2004 and 2020.
Kyle Malcolm Jarvis is a Zimbabwean former cricketer who represented Zimbabwe and played for Lancashire. The son of another former Zimbabwean international cricketer Malcolm Jarvis,he was educated at St John's College,Harare,where he excelled at rugby and cricket. Kyle was a key bowler for Zimbabwe in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup and he also played for the Zimbabwe U-19 Rugby Team. He was coached by Zimbabwean veteran seamer Heath Streak. He was one of the fastest bowlers to have played for Zimbabwe bowling at 140 km/h very often during his early career. On 17 June 2021,Jarvis retired from all forms of cricket after battling a trio of illnesses earlier this year.
The Southern Rocks is one of five Zimbabwean cricket franchises. They are a first-class cricket team,based in the Masvingo and Matabeleland South area. They play their home matches at Masvingo Sports Club in Masvingo. The team initially ceased to play after the 2013–14 season. In their 47 first-class matches they won 3,lost 27,and drew 17. However,in December 2020,Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed they would be one of the teams playing in the 2020–21 Logan Cup Southern Rocks won their first Logan Cup trophy in the same 2020–21 season.
The Mashonaland Eagles is one of five cricket Zimbabwean cricket franchises. They are based in the Harare Metropolitan and Mashonaland Central area and play both first-class and limited overs cricket. They play their home matches at Harare Sports Club in Harare.
Sikandar Raza Butt is a Pakistani-born Zimbabwean international cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman who bowls right arm off-spin and plays as an all-rounder. He made his international debut for Zimbabwe in May 2013.
The 2011–12 Stanbic Bank 20 Series was a Twenty20 cricket competition held in Zimbabwe from 25 November –4 December 2011. It was the third edition of the Stanbic Bank 20 Series,the premier Twenty20 cricket competition in Zimbabwe. It was won by Mountaineers who defeated Mashonaland Eagles by 27 runs in a thrilling final,in which they defended 142 and dismissed the Eagles for 115 mostly due to the leading wicket-taker of the tournament,Shingirai Masakadza. Mountaineers were particularly strong throughout the tournament,and played some high standard of cricket,that saw them first finish top of the group with 3 wins of 4 matches,then overhaul the heavily favored Matabeleland Tuskers in the 1st Semi at Harare. It was the same time that Mashonaland Eagles the eventual losing finalists,defeated the favored Mid West Rhinos by 53 runs coming from the brink of elimination to earn the playoff final berth against Matabeleland Tuskers. Southern Rocks had a forgettable tournament,finishing in last place in the group stage. In the playoff final,Eagles scored 207/7 mostly due to Essex and Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate's fiery 121* off 58 balls,and Tuskers were defeated by 23 runs despite a blowing half-century from the tournament's highest run-scorer Chris Gayle and another blazing one by Steven Trenchard.
Peter Joseph Moor is a Zimbabwean cricketer,who now plays for Ireland. He plays as a wicket-keeper batsman and is a former vice-captain for the Zimbabwe cricket team. Moor holds an Irish passport,and since 2021,he played cricket in Ireland with an aim to qualify to play for the Ireland cricket team. In June 2022,Moor was selected in an Ireland Development XI to play a four-day game against Gloucestershire 2nd XI. On 4 April 2023,Moor made his international debut for Ireland.
