Vusumuzi Robert Shongwe (born 22 April 1958) is a South African politician who is currently serving in the provincial legislature and Executive Council in Mpumalanga province. Between September and November 2015, Shongwe served as acting Premier of Mpumalanga while Premier David Mabuza was on sick leave. He is a member of the African National Congress and was formerly treasurer of the party's provincial executive committee in Mpumalanga, previously the chairperson of the ANC in the Gert Sibande region.

Early life

Vusumuzi Robert Shongwe was born on 22 April 1958[ citation needed ] in Breyten near Ermelo in what is now Mpumalanga province. [1]

Career in government

In the 2014 South African general election, Shongwe was elected as a member of the Mpumalanga provincial legislature for the African National Congress (ANC). [2] He was appointed Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety, Security and Liaison in the province, [3] in which capacity he was the political head of the provincial security structure. [4] [5] [6] [7] While he was in this role, David Mabuza took extended sick leave and Shongwe was appointed acting Premier of Mpumalanga in his stead between September and November 2015. [3] [8] [9]

After the 2016 local government elections, Mabuza reshuffled his cabinet and appointed Shongwe his MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs. [10] He also became Leader of Government Business in the Mpumalanga legislature under Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane. [11] In February 2020, Premier Mtsweni-Tsipane assigned him to meet with Russia's Sverdlovsk region minister of international and foreign economic affairs, Visiliy Kozlov, for bilateral talks held in Mbombela. [11]

In April 2020, Shongwe called on families and municipalities in Mpumalanga to consider starting vegetable gardens in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in South Africa, as an alternative to receiving food donations. [12]

On 24 February 2021, Shongwe returned to his old portfolio as MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison. [13]

African National Congress positions

In December 2015, Shongwe was elected the provincial treasurer of the ANC in Mpumalanga during an elective congress that also elected Mabuza for a third term as ANC provincial chairperson. [14] [15] Before that, Shongwe had served as regional chairperson of the ANC in the party's large Gert Sibande region. [16]

Personal life

Shongwe lives in Ermelo in Gert Sibande District Municipality. He is married to Charmaine Zwane and they have three children. [17] Their third child, Sethu Thandiswa, died on 15 April 2015 at the age of eight when she was hit by a speeding car while crossing a street. [18] [19]

Shiba is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).

Mabhuza Simeon Ginindza was a South African politician. He was born in Eerstehoek. Ginindza served both in the Apartheid homeland administration and the post-Apartheid ANC government that elected Nelson Mandela as the first black President in 1994.

Leonah Lindiwe Ntshalintshali is a South African politician who is currently Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development in the provincial government of Mpumalanga. She was previously MEC for Arts, Sports, Culture and Recreation from 2019 to 2021 and Mayor of Witbank's Emalahleni Local Municipality from 2015 to 2018.

Tsietsi Peter Nyoni is a South African politician and a member of the African National Congress (ANC) who currently serves as the Deputy Director-General for the Mpumalanga Provincial Government. He previously served as one of the executive directors for the Mpumalanga Human Settlements Department until he was removed in 2013 from the position by then Premier David Mabuza. He was appointed to head the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the province in August 2016 until February 2020 when current Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane made him the provincial government's Deputy Director-General.

Sasekani Janet Manzini is a South African politician who currently serves as the MEC for Health in the Mpumalanga provincial government, appointed in July 2018 as well as the Provincial spokesperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Mpumalanga. She was elected to serve on the ANC's provincial executive committee (PEC) in December 2015 from the position of provincial African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) secretary. Manzini served as the MEC for the provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport from August 2016 to July 2018. She has been a member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature since February 2016.

Gillion Pudumo Mashego is a South African politician who served as the Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport from July 2018 until February 2021. He has been a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress since May 2014. He was the provincial Health MEC from May 2014 until July 2018.

Petrus Simon "Pat" Ngomane is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress, he was elected to the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature in May 2014. He served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety, Security and Liaison from August 2016 until May 2019, when he was appointed MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. Ngomane served in the position until an executive council reshuffle in February 2021.

Mohita Latchminarain is a South African politician from Mpumalanga who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport from February 2021 until October 2022. She has been a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature since May 2019. Latchminarain is a member of the governing African National Congress.

Speedy Katisho Mashilo is a South African politician who is currently the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements in Mpumalanga, as well as both the deputy provincial chairperson and acting provincial treasurer of the local branch of the African National Congress (ANC).

Violet Sizani Siwela is a South African politician from Mpumalanga. She is a Member of the National Assembly, where she chairs the Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development, and a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC). The Executive Council of Mpumalanga is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of Mpumalanga. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature by the Premier of Mpumalanga, an office held since March 2018 by Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane.

Blessing Thandi Shongwe is a South African politician who is currently serving as Mpumalanga's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Culture, Sport and Recreation. She formerly served as Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature from 2014 until March 2018, when she was first appointed to the Mpumalanga Executive Council. She was formerly Mpumalanga's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety, Security and Liaison from May 2019 to February 2021.

Sibusiso Innocent Malaza is a South African politician who served as Mpumalanga's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education between March 2018 and May 2019. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature from 2014 until 2019, when he failed to gain re-election.

Mzikayifani Andries Gamede is a South African politician who served in the Mpumalanga Executive Council from February 2013 until May 2019, when he declined to stand for re-election to the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), he served as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements from 2013 to 2014 and as MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs from 2014 to 2019. He is also a former mayor of Mkhondo Local Municipality and of Gert Sibande District Municipality, and he founded the Independent Community Movement Association, which is active in that region.

Michael "Ngrayi" Ngwenya is a South African politician from Mpumalanga. He was Regional Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Ehlanzeni, Mpumalanga from 2011 to 2019, in which capacity he was an influential ally of Premiers David Mabuza and Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane. In July 2021, he was suspended from the party for five years because of his role in organising a political rally in support of former President Jacob Zuma.Mr Ngrayi known as Lomdzala has joined EFF in June 2023. Immediately after Joining EFF, the ANC Offices in Drikoppies Mpumalanga rebranded from the traditional ANC colours to EFF colours and logo.
