Founded in 1890, WSU is also one of the oldest land-grant universities in the American West. With an undergraduate enrollment of 24,278 and a total enrollment of 28,581, it is the second largest institution for higher education in Washington state behind the University of Washington. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".

The campus was established in 1990 by the Joint Center for Higher Education (JCHE) and has been owned and operated by Washington State University since 1998. It is located within Spokane's University District just east of Downtown Spokane, along the southern bank of the Spokane River across from Gonzaga University.
West Coast University (WCU) is a private, for-profit university focused on healthcare degrees with campus locations in Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Ontario, California; Richardson, Texas; and Miami, Florida. David Pyle founded American Career College in 1979 under the name of American College of Optics. Originally the school focused only on optical dispensing. In May 1997, Pyle purchased West Coast University, which was chartered by the State of California in 1909, out of bankruptcy, and developed a program for the training of registered nurses.

In 2013, the college and its programs were relocated to the WSU Health Sciences Spokane campus, which also houses the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and College of Nursing. Along with their Doctor of Pharmacy program, the college offers dual degrees and certificates in engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, communications and an MBA. To better serve rural areas of Washington state, in 2015 the college established its extension in Yakima, located in central Washington. The program is housed in the Pacific Northwest University campus.
The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is a public medical school headquartered in Spokane, Washington. Founded in 2015, it is part of Washington State University, and is the second public medical school in the state of Washington. It welcomed its inaugural class in the fall of 2017, joining the University of Washington and Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences as one of three medical schools in the state.
The University District, also referred as the U-District or Spokane University District, is a 770-acre area, tax increment financing, and innovation district in Spokane, Washington. It is located just east of its Downtown Spokane in the East Central and Logan neighborhoods, and is home to a number of higher education institutions and their surrounding neighborhoods.
Wright State University–Lake Campus is a branch campus of Wright State University located in Jefferson Township, between Celina, and St. Marys, Ohio. The 211 acres (85 ha) campus sits on the northern shore of Grand Lake St. Marys at 7600 Lake Campus Drive. Founded in 1962 by the Western Ohio Educational Foundation, an organization created to support higher education in the Mercer and Auglaize counties of Ohio, the school was affiliated with Ohio Northern University before it became a branch campus of Wright State University in 1969. Located near Dayton, Wright State is part of the University System of Ohio.
