Critical reception

Jem Aswad of Variety praised the release for being part of Sault's history of innovative releases and characterizes different movements of the song as a "power-trio version of a Bob Marley song" followed by "a piano-led ballad... with a gorgeous soulful chorus" and ending in "a gentle acoustic song". [3] In Paste , Rosa Sofia Kaminski also notes the three-act structure and praises the release for having a "story is told so intimately that it feels like it happened to someone you know". [4]

Sault are a British music collective that make a mixture of R&B, house and disco. The project is helmed by producer Inflo, best known for his work with Little Simz, Michael Kiwanuka, Cleo Sol, Jungle and Adele. Despite critical acclaim, Sault eschew interaction with the media and features an array of unnamed collaborators. They have never played a live show, given an interview or released a music video in support of their music. They frequently foreground black-centric issues.

Nine is the fifth studio album by the British rhythm and blues collective Sault, released on 25 June 2021 on Forever Living Originals. Produced by Inflo, the album was only available on streaming services and as a digital download for 99 days, until 2 October 2021. The album received widespread critical acclaim, appearing on several end-of-year lists and received praise for its diversity of musical genres and styles as well as the lyrics' exploration of the urban black experience.

"Skate" is a song by American superduo Silk Sonic, which consists of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. It was released on July 30, 2021, by Aftermath Entertainment and Atlantic Records as the second single from their debut studio album An Evening with Silk Sonic (2021). The song was written by Mars, Brandon Anderson, Dernst Emile II, James Fauntleroy, Domitille Degalle, and JD Beck, and produced by Mars and D'Mile. "After Last Night" is a song by American superduo Silk Sonic, which consists of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, with Thundercat and Bootsy Collins. It was solely released as an urban contemporary radio single in the United States on July 5, 2022 by Atlantic Records, and served as the fifth single from Silk Sonic's debut studio album, An Evening with Silk Sonic (2021). "After Last Night" was written by Mars, Brandon Anderson, Dernst Emile II, James Fauntleroy, Stephen Bruner, Jonathan Yip, Ray Romulus, Jeremy Reeves and Ray Charles McCollough II. The production was handled by Mars, D'Mile, Yip, Romulus, Reeves and McCollough II, the latter four, as the Stereotypes. "After Last Night" is a funk, neo soul and R&B ballad, while lyrically.

Emily "Em" Beihold is an American singer-songwriter. She released her debut EP Infrared in 2017. In 2020 she was noticed by music promotion brand Live2 LCC who subsequently teamed up with her to help promote music going forward. After signing to Republic Records and Moon Projects, she released her major-label debut single, "Numb Little Bug" in 2022 which led her rise to fame. On July 22, 2022, Beihold released her second EP, Egg in the Backseat.

The Walls Are Way Too Thin is the second extended play (EP) by British singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone. It was released on 5 November 2021, by Interscope Records.

"Numb Little Bug" is a song by American singer-songwriter Em Beihold, released as her major-label debut single on January 28, 2022, through Republic Records and Moon Projects, as the second single from her second EP, Egg in the Backseat. "Taking Me Back" is a song by American rock musician Jack White. First released in October 2021, it was his first new solo music in over three years. The song served as the lead single from his 2022 album Fear of the Dawn, and its b-side, a mellower acoustic re-recording of the song entitled "Taking Me Back (Gently)", was also the first song released from his second album of 2022, Entering Heaven Alive.
