The 11th Federal Assembly of United Left was held in Madrid from 4 June to 5 June 2016, to renovate the governing bodies of United Left (IU) and establish the party's main lines of action and strategy for the next leadership term. A primary election to elect the new general coodinator of the party was held from 26 May to 29 May 2016. This was the first leadership election in IU's history in which all the party members were allowed to vote.

The congress was held just before the 2016 Spanish general election, which IU contested in a coalition with Podemos.^[1] This decision produced an internal rift, leaving the party divided into three factions. The first one was composed of incumbent General Coordinator Cayo Lara and members of the old guard who were radically against any alliance with Podemos. The second was led by IU's spokesman in the Congress of Deputies Alberto Garzón—who was contesting the general election for Unidos Podemos—and received the support of the majority sector of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and of most of the IU federations. The third sector was made up of members of Open Left (IzAb), the party led by former general coordinator Gaspar Llamazares, a longtime critic of Lara's leadership.

The leadership election saw a generational renovation with Garzón becoming the new general coordinator in a landslide as he received 74.7% of the members vote. Meanwhile, the candidacy of Paloma López Bermejo—supported by Lara and the old guard—received 20.8% of the vote and the candidate of IzAb, Tasio Oliver, finished last with just 4.6% of support.^[2]^[3]^[4]

During his political career, he served as Second Deputy Prime Minister and as Minister of Social Rights and 2030 Agenda of the Government of Spain from 2020 to 2021. He also served as Member of the Congress of Deputies from 2016 to 2021, representing Madrid. Iglesias is a co-founder of Podemos, a left-wing political party that he led from 2014 until his resignation in 2021.

Alberto Carlos Garzón Espinosa is a Spanish former politician and economist. He was the Minister of Consumer Affairs from 2020 to 2023. He has been a member of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and United Left since 2003. In the 2011 general election, he was elected as an MP within that coalition. He has been the Secretary of Constituent Process in IU from 2014 to 2016, and in 2015, he was elected as an IU candidate for that year's general election. He is a researcher at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.

United Left of Asturias is the Asturian federation of the Spanish left wing political and social movement United Left. Manuel González Orviz is the current General Coordinator. The Communist Party of Asturias and Izquierda Abierta are the major members of the coalition.

United Left/The Greens–Assembly for Andalusia is the Andalusian federation of the Spanish left wing political and social movement United Left. Toni Valero is the current General Coordinator. Unidas Podemos, formerly called Unidos Podemos and also known in English as United We Can, was a democratic socialist electoral alliance formed by Podemos, United Left, and other left-wing to far-left parties in May to contest the 2016 Spanish general election. The alliance's official pre-agreement was announced on 9 May 2016 after weeks of negotiations. It was re-styled to the feminine form of its name ahead of the April 2019 Spanish general election.

Attempts to form a government in Spain followed the Spanish general election of 28 April 2019, which failed to deliver an overall majority for any political party. As a result, the previous cabinet headed by Pedro Sánchez was forced to remain in a caretaker capacity until the election of a new government.

Antonio Maíllo Cañadas is a Spanish politician of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE). From 2013 to 2019 he was the general coordinator of United Left/The Greens–Assembly for Andalusia (IULV–CA) and he was a deputy in the Parliament of Andalusia from 2015 to 2019, serving as spokesman of the IULV–CA and Adelante Andalucía groups. In 2024, he became general co-ordinator of the United Left (IU).

The 12th Federal Assembly of United Left was held in Madrid from 26 March to 27 March 2021, to renovate the governing bodies of the United Left (IU) and establish the party's main lines of action and strategy for the next leadership term. The federal assembly was initially scheduled for July 2020, but it was postponed as a result of COVID-19 pandemic.

The 13th Federal Assembly of United Left was held in Madrid from 18 May to 19 May 2024, to renovate the governing bodies of the United Left (IU) and establish the party's main lines of action and strategy for the next leadership term.
