The 1872 New York City eight hour day strike was one of the first citywide strikes for the eight hour day in North America. More than 100,000 workers in total, across building and manufacturing trades participated in the strike. Initially it was successful in wining the eight hour day for many workers. It culminated in a 20,000 person march in the city calling for the eight hour day. However following police crackdowns on picketing and a union busting campaign by large employers, it ended in defeat, with many of the initial gains reversed by employers.
Prior to the strike, the start of the American Civil War in 1861 and the subsequent upswing of wartime industrial production in the North, East and West, had brought with it greater labor power among industrial workers. Initially many workers were hesitant to strike due to its potential interference with the war effort, however after facing repeated wage reductions, strikes and union organizing more broadly proliferated. This included the notable Grand Eight-Hour League. By 1863 strikes were common in many industries. [1] : 124–126
The draft of 1863 would also cause uproar among those in the Union, it gave an exemption to any who could pay $300 (equivalent to $7,424in 2023) to avoid it, which allowed the wealthy to avoid the draft. This would lead to the New York City draft riots. The conditions of draft caused some bitterness by some white workers against the Union. Racial hatred towards free Black Americans in the north was also a prevalent issue, with many White union workers viewing them as strikebreakers during the war. [1] : 126
Following the defeat of the Confederacy and end of the war, the labor movement and its efforts would greatly expand in the United States, labor newspapers began popping up across the country, statewide union conventions started to be held, and pressure for a limited workday greatly increased. In 1866, a national congress of trade unions & associations (NLU) was organized in Baltimore, on August 20, with plans to meet next year for a general convention in Chicago, Ill.. During this first meeting in Baltimore a general resolution around the eight hour workday was adopted: [1] : 133 [2]
WHEREAS, the history and legislation of the past has demonstrated that no dependence whatever can be placed upon the pledges and professions of representatives of existing political parties, so far as the interests of the industrial classes are concerned; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the time has come when the workingmen of the United States should cut themselves loose from all party ties and organize themselves into the National Labor Party, the object of which shall be to secure the enactment of a law making eight hours a day's work.
In 1869, The NLU passed a motion claiming it didn't recognize color, however black workers were largely excluded from the individual unions making up the NLU, and thus formed their own in response. [3]
In 1868, an eight-hour day bill applying to all government workers was passed in Congress, overriding president Andrew Johnson's attempt to veto it. [4] Its requirement was for all government workers to be paid their previous daily wage, but have their workday reduced to eight hours. However it was continually unenforced or subverted by government officials. [1] : 130–133
In 1867, the eight hour day was made law in New York, but was largely unenforced. Thus having little effect, and causing resentment among workers. Seeing the results of the Chicago general strike of 1866 for the eight hour workday, which was crushed by local militia, police and hostilely covered by press of the time; [5] New York City workers initially avoided a strike for its enforcement and instead tried to apply pressure within the legislative system. [5] 1870 was also a time of recession which was followed by an anti-union offensive by employers, but NYC unions survived the attack biding time. [6]
After years of waiting and attempting a legislative solution by the fall of 1871 strikes for the eight hour day had begun in NYC. First by stone cutters who then were joined by a sympathy strike of 8,000 building trade workers. This would lead to the International Workingmen's union, NLU, Steward's Eight Hour League to organize a general strike in NYC. [5]
In early May 1972, building trades workers would strike in demand for the eight hour day. A few days later, furniture makers would join the strike. Aided by this time of the year being the busy season of the trades, employers gave into demands quickly, spurring more workers to join the general strike. By May 25, 20,000 were reported on strike. [6]
By June 8, the Eight Hour League would have 21,000 dues paying members, and by the end of that month over 100,000 workers had participated in the city's general strike for an eight-hour day. [6]
At first, the strike won several trades within the city the eight hour workday, including: bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers, painters, plumbers, brown and bluestone-cutters, stonemasons, masons' laborers, paper hangers, and plate printers. [1] : 143 Smaller employers were the first to cede to the demands of striking workers, while larger manufacturers were more resistant, notably the Steinway & Sons piano manufacturing corporation. To break up pickets at their factory, William Steinway had arranged 300 policemen to guard factory gates. Steinway also had his friend Oswald Ottendorfer, and owner of city's leading German newspaper, to smear the strikers as violent and as manipulated by union agitators and communists. [6]
While employers increased their attacks on strikers in June, workers organized a parade for June 10, to rally for the eight hour day. Around 20,000 workers reportedly participated in the march. Anti-strike papers of the time associated the march with the recent Paris Commune, and fear mongered the strikers as a violent threat. [6]
The parade did not lead to any new victories for workers in securing the eight hour day. This was followed by some workers returning to work and a crackdown by police against the remaining picketers in the city. Police started to remove pickets with force, attacking workers with clubs. According to the New York Herald on June 17, at one sugar refinery: [6]
The police, in their onslaught struck the men with their clubs, regardless of anything but the order they had received and the poor wretches scattered, groaning and bleeding."
That same day, the police threatened to arrest the president of the Eight Hour League, Richard Schluter. Following the police crackdown, employers heightened their union busting efforts and by the end of the month had largely clawed back the previous victories by workers for the eight hour day. Trades that had previously won the demand had it retracted by their employers and by October, only about 15,000 workers in NYC were working the eight hour day. [6]
At the time, police in NYC were a relatively new institution, having been founded in 1845. [7] As Nadel Stan notes, while police force against strikers would later become standard practice in breaking up strikes later in the century, at this point it was relatively new to NYC, and it played a deciding factor in the defeat of the strikers. [6]

While unsuccessful, the strike had set a precedent for the eight hour strikes of 1886 of the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor. [6] This movement would ultimately culminate to the Haymarket Affair in the fight for the eight hour day. [8] Eventually the fight for the 8 hour workday would be partially won with the 1940 amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act that mandated overtime one and a half for any time over 40 hours a week. Strike action, also called labor strike, labour strike in British English, or simply strike, is a work stoppage caused by the mass refusal of employees to work. A strike usually takes place in response to employee grievances. Strikes became common during the Industrial Revolution, when mass labor became important in factories and mines. As striking became a more common practice, governments were often pushed to act. When government intervention occurred, it was rarely neutral or amicable. Early strikes were often deemed unlawful conspiracies or anti-competitive cartel action and many were subject to massive legal repression by state police, federal military power, and federal courts. Many Western nations legalized striking under certain conditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The United States textile workers' strike of 1934, colloquially known later as The Uprising of '34 was the largest textile strike in the labor history of the United States, involving 400,000 textile workers from New England, the Mid-Atlantic states and the U.S. Southern states, lasting twenty-two days.
The Coal strike of 1902 was a strike by the United Mine Workers of America in the anthracite coalfields of eastern Pennsylvania. Miners struck for higher wages, shorter workdays, and the recognition of their union. The strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply to major American cities. At that time, residences were typically heated with anthracite or "hard" coal, which produces higher heat value and less smoke than "soft" or bituminous coal.
The Minneapolis general strike of 1934 grew out of a strike by Teamsters against most of the trucking companies operating in Minneapolis, the major distribution center for the Upper Midwest. The strike began on May 16, 1934 in the Market District. The worst single day was Friday, July 20, called "Bloody Friday", when police shot at strikers in a downtown truck battle, killing two and injuring 67. Ensuing violence lasted periodically throughout the summer. The strike was formally ended on August 22.

The New Orleans general strike was a general strike in the U.S. city of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, that began on November 8, 1892. Despite appeals to racial hatred, black and white workers remained united. The general strike ended on November 12, with unions gaining most of their original demands.

The 1912 New York City waiters’ strike began on May 7, 1912 at the Belmont Hotel and was the first general strike for waiters and hotel workers in New York City history. That day over 150 hotel workers walked out as a sign of protest against their poor working conditions. The strike was organized by Joseph James Ettor and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in conjunction with the Hotel Workers' International Union. At the height of the strike there were 54 hotels and 30 restaurants and other establishments without their staff. This amounted to 2,500 waiters, 1,000 cooks, and 3,000 other striking hotel workers. The strike continued through the rest of May but police began reprimanding protestors, making many of them go back to work. The strike officially ended on June 25, 1912.
The California agricultural strikes of 1933 were a series of strikes by mostly Mexican and Filipino agricultural workers throughout the San Joaquin Valley. More than 47,500 workers were involved in the wave of approximately 30 strikes from 1931 to 1941. Twenty-four of the strikes, involving 37,500 union members, were led by the Cannery and Agricultural Workers' Industrial Union (CAWIU). The strikes are grouped together because most of them were organized by the CAWIU. Strike actions began in August among cherry, grape, peach, pear, sugar beet, and tomato workers, and culminated in a number of strikes against cotton growers in the San Joaquin Valley in October. The cotton strikes involved the largest number of workers. Sources vary as to numbers involved in the cotton strikes, with some sources claiming 18,000 workers and others just 12,000 workers, 80% of whom were Mexican.
The Vacaville tree pruners' strike of 1932 was a two-month strike beginning on November 14 by the CAWIU in Vacaville, California, United States. The strikers were protesting a cut in tree pruning wages from $1.40 for an eight-hour workday to $1.25 for a nine-hour workday. The strike was characterized by multiple violent incidents including a break-in at the Vacaville jail that resulted in the kidnapping and abuse of six arrested strike leaders. The strikers were ultimately unsuccessful in demanding higher wages and fewer hours and the CAWIU voted to end the strike on January 20, 1933.
The Los Angeles Garment Workers strike of 1933 is considered to be one of the most influential strikes in Los Angeles after the passing of the New Deal. The strike is known for being one of the first strikes where Mexican immigrant workers played a prominent role. The garment workers strike occurred in the fall of 1933 in the downtown Garment District in Los Angeles, California. Leaders of the strike, including Rose Pesotta and other members of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU), organized the strike to be culturally orientated in order to include Mexican immigrant workers to fight for union recognition in the garment industry.
The 1835 Philadelphia general strike took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the first general strike in North America and involved some 20,000 workers who struck for a ten-hour workday and increased wages. The strike ended in workers successfully negotiating for and securing both.
The Los Angeles streetcar strike of 1919 was the most violent revolt against the open-shop policies of the Pacific Electric Railway Company in Los Angeles. Labor organizers had fought for over a decade to increase wages, decrease work hours, and legalize unions for streetcar workers of the Los Angeles basin. After having been denied unionization rights and changes in work policies by the National War Labor Board, streetcar workers broke out in massive protest before being subdued by local armed police force.
The 2021 Hunts Point Produce Market strike was a labor strike involving workers for Hunts Point Produce Market in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. The strike was carried out by about 1,400 members of Teamsters Local 202, all "produce handlers and delivery drivers" according to The Wall Street Journal. An agreement to end the strike was reached on January 23, 2021.
The 1906 Porto Alegre general strike, also known as the 21-day strike, was the first general strike in the history of Rio Grande do Sul. Between 3 and 21 October, about five thousand workers abandoned their work, demanding the reduction of the workday to eight hours. The movement was initiated by anarchists, who had started a strike on August 26 at Jacob Aloys Friedrichs marmoraria demanding the eight-hour day. Soon after the strike statement, they founded the Marbles Union and called the other workers in Porto Alegre to join the movement. Throughout September, the city's working class remained solidarity to paralyze marble production, and on October 3, several sectors decided to declare themselves on strike.
The 1913 Studebaker strike was a labor strike involving workers for the American car manufacturer Studebaker in Detroit. The six-day June 1913 strike, organized by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), is considered the first major labor strike in the automotive industry.
The New York City truckers' strike started on September 15, 1938, as an unsanctioned strike by some of NYC's Teamsters members, with union leadership initially opposing it. It was caused by a contract expiration, demanding lower hours at the same weekly pay and by its end somewhere between 30,000 and 35,000 strikers were directly involved.
