The 1957 season was the Hawthorn Football Club's 33rd season in the Victorian Football League and 56th overall. This was the first time since 1923 Hawthorn qualified for finals, and the first time since joining the VFL in 1925.

Hawthorn qualified for their third consecutive finals series. Hawthorn qualified for their second consecutive Grand Final. It was the second time they advanced to the Grand Final in two consecutive seasons since 1976. They faced Essendon in a rematch of last years Grand Final with a chance to repeat as premiers. Hawthorn led 68–45 at 3-quarter time but Essendon kicked 9 goals to 2 in the fourth quarter to run over the top and win 105–81. This was their first Grand Final loss since 1975.
