On April 18, 1963, a Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer CC.2 operated by No. 152 Squadron RAF crashed in Bu Hafafa, Oman, killing eight out of the nine occupants on board. The crash was one of the deadliest plane crashes involving a Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer. [1]

Aircraft

The aircraft involved was a Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer CC.2, registered as XL994 and operated by No. 152 Squadron RAF. At the time of the accident, it was five years old. [2]

Accident

The Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer CC.2 (XL994) lost control during a training flight near Bu Hafafa and crashed into the desert. The aircraft exploded on impact. Of the nine occupants onboard, eight were killed, including both crew members and four Omani military cadets. One passenger survived with serious injuries. The exact cause of the loss of control remained undetermined. [3] [4]

The aircraft was operated by No. 152 Squadron RAF and carried a mix of RAF personnel and Omani cadets. Onboard were five British personnel and four Omani cadets. All four Omani cadets and four of the British occupants were killed in the crash, leaving one British survivor. [5]

Cause

The aircraft suddenly lost control during a training flight and nosedived into the desert at Bu Hafafa, killing eight of the nine onboard. The exact cause remains unknown. [6]
