Sosnowiec is an industrial city county in the Dąbrowa Basin of southern Poland, in the Silesian Voivodeship, which is also part of the Silesian Metropolis municipal association. Located in the eastern part of the Upper Silesian Industrial Region, Sosnowiec is one of the cities of the Katowice urban area, which is a conurbation with the overall population of 2.7 million people; as well as the greater Upper Silesian metropolitan area populated by about 5.3 million people. The population of the city is 191,676 as of December 2022.
The Polish Cup in football is an elimination tournament for Polish football clubs, held continuously from 1950, and is the second most important national title in Polish football after the Ekstraklasa title. Due to mass participation of teams, the tournament is often called The Cup of the Thousand Teams.
Zagłębie Sosnowiec is a Polish professional football club based in Sosnowiec. The club was established in 1906. It won Polish Cup four times, and also was four times Polish runner up. Apart from football, the organization of Zagłębie has other departments, such as ice-hockey and men's basketball.
The Dąbrowa Basin or Zagłębie Dąbrowskie is a geographical and historical region in southern Poland. It forms western part of Lesser Poland, though it shares some cultural and historical features with the neighbouring Upper Silesia. The region is sometimes referred to in English as Zaglembie or Zaglembia, especially in Jewish publications written in the English language.

The tournament was expanded for this season, with 48 clubs entering compared to 32 in previous years, including the first clubs from Belgium to play in the Intertoto Cup - this meant an additional knock-out round was added between the Group Stage and the Quarter-Finals.

Zagłębiowski Park Sportowy, officially called ArcelorMittal Park for sponsorship reasons is a sports complex in Środula, Sosnowiec, Poland and is the home of Zagłębie Sosnowiec. Complex consists of a football stadium, ice hockey arena and indoor arena.
