The 1973 Indian Open was a men's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in New Delhi, India. It was the inaugural edition of the event and was held from 15 October through 20 October 1973. The tournament was part of the Group B tier of the Grand Prix tennis circuit. Vijay Amritraj won the singles title. [3]

The Indian Open originally called the All India Championships or formally the All India Lawn Tennis Championships and also known as The National Lawn Tennis Championships of India and later the Indian International Championships is a defunct combined tennis tournament. It was played from 1910 until 1982 and the men's event was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit, 1970 to 1979. It was held in various cities in, India and was played outdoor on multiple surfaces. Ramanathan Krishnan won most titles during the pre-Open era with six titles and Vijay Amritraj won most titles during the open era with four titles.

Tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness.

Vijay Amritraj is a former tennis player, sports commentator and actor from India. He is the first Indian to turn fully professional in sport and is often considered amongst the greatest in the history of Indian sport. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 1983.

James Henry McManus was an American tennis player who reached the semifinals of the US Open men's doubles in 1968. McManus was a founding member of the Association of Tennis Professionals. McManus was coached by Tom Stow who guided Don Budge to the Grand Slam.

Raúl Ramírez Mexican tennis player

Raúl Ramírez is a retired Mexican professional tennis player. He was active during the 1970s and 1980s. Ramírez was the first player to finish first in both singles and doubles Grand Prix point standings, accomplishing the feat in 1976. He attended and played tennis at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

The singles final was won by seventh-seeded John Alexander, last year's runner-up, who received $25,000 first prize money and earned 175 ranking points.
