Players who neither had high enough rankings nor received wild cards to enter the main draw of the annual Wimbledon Tennis Championships participated in a qualifying tournament held one week before the event. [1] Several players withdrew from the main draw after qualifying had commenced, leading to the highest ranked players who lost in the final qualifying round to be entered into the main draw as lucky losers. Onny Parun is a former tennis player of Croatian descent from New Zealand, who was among the world's top 20 for five years and who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 1971 and 1972. He made the final of the Australian Open in 1973, losing to John Newcombe in four sets, and was a US Open quarterfinalist in 1973 and also a quarterfinalist at the French Open in 1975. He eventually went on to coach the Bhatti brothers.

Defending champion Björn Borg successfully defended his title, defeating Guillermo Vilas in the final 6–2, 6–3, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1975 French Open.

Arthur Ashe defeated the defending champion Jimmy Connors in the final, 6–1, 6–1, 5–7, 6–4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1975 Wimbledon Championships. He became the first Black man to win the singles title at Wimbledon.

Brian Gottfried was the defending champion, but did not compete that year.

Sherwood Stewart and Ferdi Taygan were the defending champions but they competed with different partners that year, Stewart with Mark Edmondson and Taygan with Cássio Motta.

The men's doubles tournament at the 1983 US Open was held from August 30 to September 11, 1983, on the outdoor hard courts at the USTA National Tennis Center in New York City, United States. Peter Fleming and John McEnroe won the title, defeating Fritz Buehning and Van Winitsky in the final.

Manuel Orantes was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals. Jimmy Connors won the title for the second time and $25,000 prize money by defeating Wojciech Fibak in the final.

Mal Anderson and John Newcombe were the defending champions.
