Mats Wilander defeated Guillermo Vilas in the final, 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–0, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1982 French Open. It was his first major title and first top-level title overall. He had won the boys’ title only the previous year, and was making his French Open main-draw debut. He defeated four of the top-five seeded players consecutively to win the title.

Three-time defending champion Björn Borg defeated Ivan Lendl in the final, 6–1, 4–6, 6–2, 3–6, 6–1 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1981 French Open. It was his sixth French Open title and his eleventh and last major title overall. The final was played on June 7, the day after Borg's 25th birthday.

The men's doubles tournament at the 1982 French Open was held from 24 May until 6 June 1982 on the outdoor clay courts at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. Sherwood Stewart and Ferdi Taygan won the title, defeating Hans Gildemeister and Belus Prajoux in the final.
