Elections to the Puducherry Legislative Assembly were held in May 1985, to elect members of the 30 constituencies in Puducherry (then known as Pondicherry), in India. [1] [2] The Indian National Congress won the popular vote and the most seats, and M. O. H. Farook was appointed as the Chief Minister of Puducherry. [3]

Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency covers the entire Union Territory of Puducherry. Pondicherry became a union territory after the implementation of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution of India in 1962 and changed its name to Puducherry in 2006. This constituency first held elections in 1967 and its first member of parliament (MP) was Thirumudi N. Sethuraman of the Indian National Congress.
The Puducherry Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Indian union territory (UT) of Puducherry, which comprises four districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahé and Yanam. Out of eight union territories of India, only three have legislatures and they are Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir. After delimitation shortly after its formation, the Puducherry legislative assembly has 33 seats, of which 5 are reserved for candidates from scheduled castes and 3 members are nominated by the Government of India. 30 out of 33 Members are elected directly by the people on the basis of universal adult franchise and the remaining three are nominated by the central government. These nominated members enjoy same powers as elected members of the assembly.
M. O. Hasan Farook Maricar was an Indian politician and three-time Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. He was the youngest chief minister of any Union Territory of India. He served from 9 April 1967 to 6 March 1968 and 17 March 1969 to 3 January 1974 and from 1985 to 1990 He was thrice elected to the Lok Sabha from Pondicherry in 1991, 1996 and 1999 and served as a Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism during June 1991 – December 1992.
The All India N.R. Congress is a regional political party formed by the Chief Minister of Puducherry, N. Rangaswamy in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. He announced the party formation on 7 February 2011 in the party's head office in Pondicherry as a breakaway from the Indian National Congress. Currently it is part of the National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP currently the ruling party of India.

M. O. H. F. Shahjahan is an Indian politician. He is a member of the Indian National Congress in the Union Territory of Puducherry. He won the 2016 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election from Kalapet constituency by a narrow margin of 500 votes over All India N.R Congress' candidate P.M.L. Kalyanasundram who had earlier defeated him in the 2011 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election in the same constituency. He has been a Revenue, transport, IT, minority affairs minister in the Government of Puducherry. He represented Lawspet constituency between 2001 and 2011 and Kalapet constituency from 2016 to 2021. He is also the son of M. O. H. Farook who was former Chief Minister of Pondicherry.
The Second Assembly of PondicherryDeuxième Assemblée de Pondichéry succeeded the First Assembly of Pondicherry and was constituted after the victory of Indian National Congress (INC) and allies in the 1964 assembly election held on 23 August 1964.
