The 1985 White House intrusion occurred on 20 January 1985 when Robert Allen Latta, [1] a 45-year-old water meter reader, successfully entered the White House uninvited. [2] [3]
Latta, of Denver, Colorado, held a master's degree in mechanical engineering and worked as a water meter reader for the Denver water department, where he held the Denver meter-reading record of 600 readings in a single day. [2] Time magazine quoted his supervisor as saying "He is a phenomenon of accuracy and speed." [2]
While on vacation in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 1985 (the day that President Ronald Reagan was sworn in for his second term) Latta gained access to the White House by following the 33 members of the Marine Band past security. [2] While carrying an overnight bag, he was able to wander around the Executive Residence for 14 minutes, [1] but was eventually discovered near the Blue Room and was apprehended by Secret Service agents, who noticed that he had neither a uniform nor an instrument. [2] [4] Latta reportedly did not know he was doing anything illegal, [5] and was quoted as saying "I thought if I wasn't supposed to be there, somebody would stop me" [6] and that "I just wanted to see the ceremony...I'm kind of patriotic." [4]
Secret Service agents brought in dogs to search for explosives and interrogated Latta outside the White House. Later Latta was turned over to the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia and charged with a misdemeanor count of unlawful entry. [2] Latta was jailed for five days and interviewed by court-appointed psychiatrist Dr. Norman L. Wilson, [3] who discovered that Latta had voluntarily committed himself to a psychiatric hospital in June 1984 [3] and heard voices saying, "You blew it," [2] according to documents filed in the District of Columbia Superior Court. [3] Latta was committed to St. Elizabeths Hospital. [7]
Wilson recommended further psychiatric study of Latta and a hearing commissioner on January 21 ordered Latta to undergo mental evaluation, but that order was not received by city psychiatrists until three days later, several hours after he had posted bond [3] on $1,000 bail. [2] Latta was quoted as saying the intrusion was "a mistake" but also "the high point of being in Washington" [2] and that "I just wanted to see how far I could get." [8] The unlawful entry had a maximum penalty of six months in jail, but because it was only a misdemeanor, Washington, D.C., prosecutors could not extradite him from Colorado if he did not return voluntarily. Latta was arrested May 7, 1985, after he failed to show up for a court appearance in Washington, D.C., but was released on personal recognizance after Magistrate Judge Donald E. Abram of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado set a hearing on whether he should be returned to Washington, D.C., to face charges. [9]

On February 17, 1974, U.S. Army Private First Class Robert Kenneth Preston (1953–2009) took off in a stolen Bell UH-1B Iroquois "Huey" helicopter from Tipton Field, Maryland, and landed it on the South Lawn of the White House in a significant breach of security. Preston had enlisted in the Army to become a helicopter pilot. However, he did not graduate from the helicopter training course and lost his opportunity to attain the rank of warrant officer pilot. His enlistment bound him to serve four years in the Army, and he was sent to Fort Meade as a helicopter mechanic. Preston believed this situation was unfair and later said he stole the helicopter to show his skill as a pilot.

The Salahis and Allen arrived separately and did not appear to have colluded in their efforts. They were able to pass through two security checkpoints, enter the White House complex, and meet President Barack Obama. The incident resulted in security investigations and legal inquiries.

The hacker, David Kernell, obtained access to Palin's account by looking up biographical details, such as her high school and birthdate, and using Yahoo!'s account recovery for forgotten passwords. Kernell then posted several pages of Palin's email on 4chan's /b/ board. Kernell, who at the time of the offense was a 20-year-old college student, was the son of longtime Democratic state representative Mike Kernell of Memphis.
On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred inside a Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, United States, during a midnight screening of the film The Dark Knight Rises. Dressed in tactical clothing, 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms. Twelve people were killed, and 70 others were injured, 58 of them from gunfire.
An intrusion of the White House occurred on September 19, 2014, when Omar J. Gonzalez, an Iraq War veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder, jumped over the White House's fence and entered the building's front door, overpowered a security officer, was stopped by another who was off-duty, then later by multiple security officers, and arrested. He was found to have a small knife in his pocket, and stated that the "atmosphere was collapsing" and he needed to tell the president so that he could alert the public. President Barack Obama and his family were not home at the time of the incident. As a result of this incident and other security breaches at the White House, the then-director of the United States Secret Service, Julia Pierson, resigned from her position on October 1, 2014.
