The 1987 Eastern Suburbs Roosters season was the 80th in the club's history. They competed in the NSWRL's 1987 Winfield Cup Premiership, finishing the regular season 2nd (out of 13), before competing in the play-offs and coming within one match of the grand final only to lose to the Canberra Raiders. The Roosters also competed in the 1987 National Panasonic Cup.

Trevor Gillmeister is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who is employed as a rugby league analyst at Channel 7 Brisbane. During his playing days, Gillmeister played for the Eastern Suburbs Roosters, Brisbane Broncos, Penrith Panthers and the South Queensland Crushers, as well as representing Queensland and Australia.

The Sydney Roosters have a history that stretches back from the birth of rugby league football in Australia in 1908 to the present day. It is the only remaining club to have played every season of top-tier football in Australia's history.

Hugh Joseph McGahan is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer, and coach who represented New Zealand. He retired as the New Zealand national team's all-time top try scorer, with 16. Since retirement McGahan has worked as a rugby league newspaper columnist and a football manager.

Wayne Portlock is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He played for Eastern Suburbs and North Sydney in the NSWRL competition and for Hull F.C. in the England.
