Ivan Lendl defeated Miloslav Mečíř in the final, 6–2, 6–2, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1989 Australian Open. It was his first Australian Open title and seventh major singles title overall.

Defending champion Ivan Lendl defeated Stefan Edberg in the final, 4–6, 7–6(7–3), 5–2 ret., to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1990 Australian Open. It was his second Australian Open title and eighth and last major singles title overall. Edberg was forced to retire during the third set of the final due to a torn stomach muscle. This marked the first occasion since the 1911 Wimbledon Championships that a man withdrew during the championship match of a singles major.

The 1983 U.S. Pro Indoor – Singles was an event of the 1983 U.S. Pro Indoor men's tennis tournament. The draw consisted of 48 players, 16 of them were seeded. First-seeded John McEnroe was the defending champion. He successfully defended his title, defeating second-seeded Ivan Lendl, 4–6, 7–6(9–7), 6–4, 6–3 in the final, breaking a seven-match losing streak against the Czech.

Top-seed Jimmy Connors claimed the title and first prize money of $25,000 by defeating third-seeded Guillermo Vilas in the final.

John McEnroe was the defending champion and successfully defended his title, by defeating Ivan Lendl 6–4, 6–2 in the final.
