The 1987 VFL season was the West Coast Eagles' inaugural season in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The club was introduced to the competition as part of the VFL's expansion. Ron Alexander was appointed coach of the team and Ross Glendinning was appointed captain. The Eagles played 22 games, winning 11 and losing 11 to finish 8th on the ladder.

National Panasonic Cup

West Coast played their first match against another AFL club during the 1987 National Panasonic Cup, the VFL's night series at the time, defeating Footscray by 29 points at Waverley Park after trailing by 28 points at three-quarter time.

John Herbert Todd is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the South Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL).

Stephen Malaxos is a former Australian rules footballer and coach from Western Australia. While playing for Claremont in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), he won the 1984 Sandover Medal. Malaxos was an All-Australian with Claremont in 1986 and while he was with the West Coast Eagles in 1988. He was the inaugural fairest and best player at West Coast (1987), holds the Eagles' record for the most possessions in a game (48) and captained the club in 1990.

Ross William Glendinning is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the East Perth Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) and for the North Melbourne Football Club and the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL).

The Glendinning–Allan Medal, formerly the Ross Glenndinning Medal, is awarded to the player judged best on ground in each Western Derby football match played between Fremantle Football Club and the West Coast Eagles.

The West Coast Eagles is an Australian rules football club based in Perth, Western Australia, currently playing in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was formed in 1986, and played its first season in the competition in 1987. Having lost the 1991 grand final to Hawthorn, the club won premierships in 1992 and 1994, becoming one of the most successful teams of the 1990s. West Coast won its third premiership in 2006, but declined afterwards, finishing last in 2010, before undergoing a rapid resurgence the following season to finish fourth in 2011.

The 2017 Geelong Football Club season was the club's 118th season of senior competition in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club also fielded its reserves team in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for the 18th season. It was also the first time the club fielded a women's team, with the club joining the VFL Women's competition.
