West Coast Eagles draft history

The West Coast Eagles have drafted players through the Australian Football League's draft system, beginning with the 1988 VFL draft. The West Coast Eagles have participated in every national draft since then, and also participated in the pre-season draft (first held in 1989), the mid-season draft (held from 1990–1993), and the rookie draft (first held in 1997). So far, the West Coast Eagles have drafted over 200 players through the draft system, with another 30 or so being recruited via the VFL's old zone recruitment system prior to 1993.

The 1986 VFL draft was the third formal draft to provide recruitment opportunities to clubs participating in Australian rules football's elite Victorian Football League. Held on 26 November 1986 after the end of the 1986 VFL season, it consisted only of the national draft itself, without a subsequent rookie or pre-season draft. It was the first draft to be held since two initial drafts in 1981 and 1982, and as drafts have been held every year since, it is considered to be the first of the modern drafts.

Rivalries in the Australian Football League exist between many teams, most of which typically draw large crowds and interest regardless of both teams' positions on the ladder. The AFL encourages the building of such rivalries, as a method of increasing publicity for the league, to the point of designating one round each year as "Rivalry Round" when many of these match-ups are held on the one weekend. Whilst some rivalries, such as between teams from adjacent areas, are still strong, the designation of an entire round of fixtures as a Rivalry Round is often criticised due to some arbitrary match-ups, or ignoring stronger and more recent rivalries.

Darren Glass is a former Australian rules footballer who played as a full-back for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally from Northam, Western Australia, he attended Carine Senior High School before beginning his career with Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). He was later recruited by West Coast with the 11th pick in the 1999 National Draft, making his debut for the club the following season. Glass was named in the All-Australian team on four occasions, including as captain of the 2012 team. He was named captain of West Coast in 2008, after Chris Judd was traded to Carlton, and won club best and fairest awards in 2007, 2009, and 2011. Glass retired from football midway through the 2014 season, having played 270 games for West Coast. Darren is now the General Manager of Complete Home Filtration.

Chad Jonathon Jones is an Australian rules footballer currently listed with the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), having previously played for the Kangaroos and the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). From Perth, Western Australia, Jones made his debut for Claremont in 2003, and was recruited to the Kangaroos in the 2003 National Draft. Over three seasons at the club, he played six games, kicking a single goal, before being traded to West Coast prior to the 2007 season. At West Coast, Jones played seven games over two seasons before being delisted. Remaining with Claremont where he played as a key forward, Jones led the club's goalkicking in 2009 and 2010, also winning the Bernie Naylor Medal as the competition's leading goalkicker in both seasons. He went on to play in Claremont's 2011 and 2012 premiership sides, having also represented Western Australia in two interstate matches.

The 1989 VFL draft was the fourth annual national draft held by the Victorian Football League as the main method for the 14 teams to recruit players for the 1990 season. It consisted of a trading period, pre-draft selections, the main national draft and the 1990 pre-season draft and a non-compulsory 1990 mid-year draft. The minimum age for most draftees was 16 and clubs other than the West Coast Eagles were only allowed to choose one player each from Western Australia. For the non-Queensland and NSW clubs, players from those states had to be 19 to be selected, by which time the Brisbane Bears or Sydney Swans would have had three chances to recruit them.

Mark Steven Hepburn is a former Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne, the West Coast Eagles and the Sydney Swans in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL).

Benjamin Anthony Robbins is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Bears, the Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL).
