The 1988 Detroit Drive season was the first for the Drive.

The Drive began play in 1988 as a member of the Arena Football League. Under head coach Tim Marcum, the Drive finished the regular season 9-3 after starting the season 2-3. [1] [2] Two of the Drive's losses came at the hands of the Chicago Bruisers, who finished the season with one loss. The Drive would get a chance at revenge when they advanced to ArenaBowl II against the Bruisers, [3] and they were able to defeat the Bruisers 24-13. [4]

Willie "Satellite" Totten is an American football coach and former player. He is the quarterbacks coach at Southern University. Totten played college football for the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils as a quarterback. Teamed with wide receiver Jerry Rice, Totten set more than 50 NCAA Division I-AA passing records while Rice setting many receiving records. The Delta Devils averaged 59 points a game during the 1984 season, with Totten throwing for a record 58 touchdowns and leading the Delta Devils to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. Archie Cooley, who was the head coach at MVSU from 1980 to 1986, was the architect of the pass-oriented offense that utilized the skills of Totten. Totten served as the head football coach at Mississippi Valley State from 2002 to 2009.

Arena Bowl '88 was the Arena Football League's second championship game. The game featured the number 2 Detroit Drive (9–3) against the number 1 Chicago Bruisers (10–1–1). With 37 combined points it is the lowest-scoring ArenaBowl in history. Chicago's 13 points are the fewest points by a single team in Arenabowl history.

The 1988 Arena Football League season was the second season of the Arena Football League. The league champions were the Detroit Drive, who defeated the Chicago Bruisers in ArenaBowl II.

The 1987 Chicago Bruisers season was the first season for the arena football franchise. The Bruisers took a chance with a young team that averaged 25 years of age. The Bruisers' lost their first game in franchise history, 44–52 in overtime, to the Denver Dynamite. The Bruisers struggled in their second game, giving up 45 points in the first half before losing 23–60 to the Pittsburgh Gladiators. Despite getting off to a 2–3 start, the Bruisers had an opportunity to make it to ArenaBowl I with a win in the final week of the season against the Dynamite. The Bruisers however would lose 35–52. They finished with a record of 2–4 and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Steve Thonn is an American football coach. He was previously a head coach in the Arena Football League (AFL) for the Houston Thunderbears, Grand Rapids Rampage and Cleveland Gladiators. Thonn is also a former AFL player. He played WR/DB for the Chicago Bruisers (1988) and the Albany Firebirds (1990–1993). He was the offensive coordinator of the Georgia Force from 2004 to 2007 before being hired as the Rampage head coach.

Charles Daniel Hope is an American football coach and former player. He served as the head football coach at Eastern Kentucky University from 2003 to 2007, and Purdue University from 2009 to 2012, compiling a career college football head coaching record of 57–49. He was most recently the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the South Florida Bulls football team before stepping down after one season for family reasons.

The 1988 Chicago Bruisers season was the second season for the Chicago Bruisers. The Bruisers finished 10–1–1 and lost ArenaBowl I to the Detroit Drive.

Michael Mendoza is a former American football quarterback who played one season with the Los Angeles Cobras of the Arena Football League. He first enrolled at Los Angeles Harbor College before transferring to Northern Arizona University. He attended Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California. Mendoza was also a member of the Oakland Raiders and Ottawa Rough Riders.

David Marshall Blough is an American football coach and former quarterback who is the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Purdue and signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Following an injury to Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel, Blough assumed the starting role for the final five games of the Detroit Lions' 2019 season. He is married to Colombian-American hurdler Melissa Gonzalez.
