General elections were held in Niue on 23 February 1996. Members of the Niue People's Party won nine seats, with independents taking the other eleven. [1] Premier Frank Lui retained his seat and position. [2]
Niue is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) northeast of New Zealand. Niue's land area is about 261 square kilometres (101 sq mi) and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was about 1,600 in 2016. Niue is located in a triangle between Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. It is 604 kilometres northeast of Tonga. The island is commonly referred to as "The Rock", which comes from the traditional name "Rock of Polynesia". Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands. The terrain of the island has two noticeable levels. The higher level is made up of a limestone cliff running along the coast, with a plateau in the centre of the island reaching approximately 60 metres above sea level. The lower level is a coastal terrace approximately 0.5 km wide and about 25–27 metres high, which slopes down and meets the sea in small cliffs. A coral reef surrounds the island, with the only major break in the reef being in the central western coast, close to the capital, Alofi.
Mititaiagimene Young Vivian is a Niuean politician and diplomat, who served as Premier of Niue twice, the first time from December 1992 to March 1993 following the death of Sir Robert Rex, and the second from 2002 to 2008. He also served as a Cabinet Minister multiple times, first as Minister of Education, Economic Development and Agriculture and later as Minister of Finance under Robert Rex, and in the Cabinet of Sani Lakatani. From 1979 to 1982 he served as Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission.
Mark Herbert Blumsky is a former New Zealand politician and diplomat. He was Mayor of Wellington from 1995 to 2001, and a Member of Parliament for the National Party from 2005 to 2008. Blumsky was New Zealand's High Commissioner to Niue from 2010 to 2014.
The Niue People's Party was a political party in Niue. Founded in 1987 by Niueans living in New Zealand, it was disbanded in 2003. It was, during that time, the country's only political party.

General elections were held in Niue on 19 March 1999 to determine the composition of the twenty member national Assembly. Fourteen incumbents retained their seats, with Premier Frank Lui a notable exception. Following the election, the Niue People's Party was able to form a government, and its leader Sani Lakatani was elected premier, defeating O'Love Jacobsen 14–6. Former Assembly member Tama Posimani was elected Speaker by an identical margin.
Enetama Lipitoa is a former politician from Niue. He was an Assemblyman for Namukulu when he was elected into the Niue Legislative Assembly and was appointed to the Executive Council following the 1972 election. In 1973 he served as part of the negotiating team which negotiated the terms of Niue's self-government. He became a Cabinet Minister in Robert Rex's first Government following the attainment of self-government status by Niue on 19 October 1974.

Fifteen incumbents were re-elected, including three who were unopposed. In Mutalu, a tie between two candidates resulted in one being elected by a coin toss.
Billy Graham Talagi is a Niuean politician and former Member of the Niue Assembly. He is the brother of former Premier of Niue Toke Talagi.
Toeono Tongatule was a Niuean politician who served in the Niue Assembly until his death in October 1996. Tongatule was a member of the Niue People's Party. The 1997 Niue Common Roll by-election was held to fill Tongatule's vacant seat after his death. Billy Talagi won the seat over Terry Magaoa Chapman and Tongatule's widow, Tiva Tongatule who ran for the seat as part of the Niue People's Party.
The 2003 Niue Common Roll by-election was held in August 2003 to fill a vacant common roll seat in the Niue Assembly after the death of Hunuki Hunukitama in July 2003. The seat was won by Krypton Okesene of Tuapa, who received 55 more votes than Lofa Rex, wife of MP Robert Rex, Jr. Former director of education, Kupa Magatongia, received the third most votes, ahead of three other candidates.
Opili Talafasi is a former Niuean politician who served as a Member of the Niue Assembly for 33 years, from 1990 to 2023.
