The Khanna rail disaster occurred on 26 November 1998 near Khanna on the Khanna-Ludhiana section of India's Northern Railway in Punjab, at 03:15 when the Calcutta-bound Jammu Tawi-Sealdah Express collided with six derailed coaches of the Amritsar-bound "Frontier Mail" which were lying in its path. [1] At least 212 people were killed; [2] the trains were estimated to be carrying 2,500 passengers. The initial derailment was caused by a broken rail. A Howrah–Amritsar Express a passenger train coming from other direction hit the freight train head-on at speed, killing 46 people and injuring at least 150.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jajpur derailment</span>

On 13 February 2009, a passenger train derailment occurred at 19:45 local time near Jajpur in the eastern state of Odisha, India. Nine people were killed and 150 people were injured in the incident. Twelve carriages belonging to the Howrah–Chennai Coromandel Express are believed to have derailed following the train's departure from Jajapur Keonjhar Road station near Jajapur. The cause of the accident is currently unknown.

The Mihrawan derailment occurred on 31 May 2012, when seven coaches of the Dehradun bound Doon Express derailed near Mihrawan in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The accident took place at 1.13 PM killing four and injuring fifty more instantly. Reacting to the incident, Railway Ministry spokesman Anil Saxena told the press that "While four of the coaches got tilted, three of them derailed. So the coaches which are affected are the 11th onwards from the engine, up to the 17th coach". The region, where accident took place, does not have good road connectivity. Relief and rescue teams had to rush to the spot from Varanasi and Lucknow. On the possible cause for the accident, Railway Board member AP Mishra said that exact cause has to be ascertained. It could have been "due to excessive heat causing track expansion or some miscreant activity", he said, adding that the railway track could be cleared by the next morning. The train was heading towards Varanasi at the time of its derailment.

The Anekal derailment occurred at 7.35 AM on 13 February 2015, when nine coaches of the Ernakulam-bound Intercity Express derailed near Anekal in the Bangalore Urban district of Karnataka, India. Ten people were killed and more than one hundred and fifty injured.

On 20 November 2016, the Indore–Patna Express 19321, a scheduled train from Indore to Patna, derailed near Pukhrayan, Kanpur, India, resulting in the death of 150 passengers and injuries to at least another 150.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kuneru train derailment</span>

On January 21, 2017, the Hirakhand Express 18448, a scheduled passenger train from Jagdalpur to Bhubaneswar, derailed near the village of Kuneru in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, India, killing 41 people and injuring 68 others. The train was carrying 600 passengers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2017 Khatauli train derailment</span>

On 19 August 2017, the Kalinga Utkal Express train derailed near Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India causing fatalities: 23 people were killed and 156 others were injured. This was the fourth major passenger train derailment in 2017 and the third in Uttar Pradesh.

The Seemanchal Express derailment occurred on 3 February 2019 near Sahdei Buzurg in Vaishali district of Bihar, India. Six people were killed and more than 30 were injured.

Bahanaga Bazar railway station is a railway station on Kharagpur–Puri line, part of the Howrah–Chennai main line under Kharagpur railway division of South Eastern Railway zone. It is situated at Asimila, Bahanaga in Balasore district in the Indian state of Odisha. The station serves 14 trains daily, more than half of which remain within the state of Odisha.

On 7 June 2021, before dawn, two trains collided near Daharki, in the Ghotki District of the southern province of Sindh in Pakistan, killing at least 65 people and injuring about 150 others. An express train derailed onto the opposite track, and a second express train crashed into the first roughly a minute later. About six to eight bogies were left "completely destroyed".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bikaner–Guwahati Express derailment</span> Train derailment in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal

On 13 January 2022, the Bikaner–Guwahati Express train derailed near Domohani, Maynaguri, Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal. Nine people were killed and 50 people were injured. This was the first major train derailment in 2022, and the first in India since the Seemanchal Express derailment in Bihar in February 2019.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Odisha train collision</span> Railway accident in Odisha, India

On June 2, 2023, three trains collided in Balasore district in Odisha state of eastern India. The Coromandel Express entered the passing loop instead of the main line near Bahanaga Bazar railway station at full speed and collided with a goods train. Due to the high speed of the Coromandel Express, its 21 coaches derailed and three of those collided with the oncoming SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah Superfast Express on the adjacent track.
