Archery is the sport, practice, or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus, meaning bow. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. Archery at the 2000 Summer Olympics was held at Sydney International Archery Park in Sydney, Australia with ranking rounds on 16 September and regular competition held from 17 to 20 September. One hundred twenty-eight archers from forty-six nations competed in the four gold medal events—individual and team events for men and for women—that were contested at these games.

Archery had its debut at the 1900 Summer Olympics and has been contested in 17 Olympiads. 105 nations have competed in the Olympic archery events, with France appearing the most often at 15 times. The most noticeable trend has been the excellence of South Korean archers, who have won 27 out of 39 gold medals in archery events since 1984. Olympic archery is governed by the World Archery Federation. Recurve archery is the only discipline of archery featured at the Olympic Games. Archery is also an event at the Summer Paralympics.

The Archery World Cup is a competition organized by the World Archery Federation, where the archers compete in four stages in four countries and the best eight archers of each category advance to an additional stage to contest the Archery World Cup Final. Oh Jin-hyek is a South Korean archer. Oh first competed for the Korean national team in 1999, but did not win a major individual international tournament until he won the gold medal in the Men's individual event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, also becoming the first Korean male archer to win an Olympic individual gold medal. With partners Im Dong-hyun and Kim Bub-min, he also finished in third place in the Men's team event. He was the world number one ranked archer from April 2013 to June 2014, winning the individual gold medal at the 2013 Archery World Cup Final and two individual silver medals at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships.

Turkish Archery Federation is the governing body of the archery sport in Turkey. It was founded in 1961. The Turkish organization is member of the European and Mediterranean Archery Union (EMAU) and the World Archery Federation (WAF). The TOF is based in Ankara and its current chairman is Abdullah Topaloğlu, who serves his second term elected in 2012.

The 1999 World Archery Championships was the 40th edition of the event. It was held in Riom, France on 22–29 July 1999 and was organized by World Archery Federation (FITA).

Mete Gazoz is a Turkish recurve archer. He won the gold medal in the men's individual event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. He also represented Turkey at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the 2023 World Archery Championships held in Berlin, Mete Gazoz emerged victorious, claiming the prestigious Individual title. In an intense final, he triumphed over the skilled Canadian archer Eric Peters, securing his place as the first Turkish archer to achieve the esteemed recurve gold medal in a World Championship.

International competitions in 3D archery take place every two years.

World Para Archery Championship was first held in 1998 in the UK and take place every two years.

Jang Min-hee is a South Korean archer. She won gold in the women's individual and team events at the 2021 World Archery Championships held in Yankton, United States. She also won the gold medal in the women's team event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan.
